New sleep apnea pill study

Post by angeltink » Wed Oct 01, 2014 10:16 pm

Just saw WGN news tonight that doctors are doing a study using a pill called dronabinal to boost serotonin levels while we sleep so our airway doesn't relax as much as it typically does. Here is the link http://wgntv.com/2014/09/30/a-pill-for-sleep-apnea/ There is a phone number to call for more info on the study. I just thought some on her might find it interesting.

Hmmm, I wonder if there is any THC in it.

So ... a pill is going to prevent you throat from relaxing and collapsing while lying down as if you are awake sitting up. Can't see how that is going to work without have some unintentional side effects that may much worse.

Does it have have a cable and software that connects with the pill, so you can run software and see if its working, or is it just another mousemilk product that promises to work but has no solid proof. Jim

Supposedly it boosts serotonin which stops the your throat from relaxing as it normally does during sleep. I am sure there will be many sleep studies to prove it works if it ever goes to market.

angeltink,

This study on L-tryptophan, a serotonergic supplement, regarding the effect of sleep apnea was done in 1983 on 15 people. It looks like it had a dramatic improvement.

That is why I find the current study you linked to interesting about serotonin being involved. Hopefully, there will be good information on what transpires.

It would be interesting to try and get some marinol and then see if my AHI goes down while asleep. Marinol is the brand name. It doesn't get you high.
I have noticed that NyQuil makes my AHI go higher. I had an itchy throat and took some the other night and my ahi went to 5.8 from 3.

I wonder if you'd end up having some very interesting dreams.

If given the choice between a pill introducing a bunch of chemicals that could cause untold side effects, or my machine, I think I'll just take the machine. I have enough "prescribed" chemicals that I don't want going into my body now.

Increases in serotonin do not keep the throat from relaxing. It keeps you from having REM sleep. And we know in REM sleep the muscles relax the most. So while the drug may lower AHI, it is destroying REM sleep and the patient will have moved from one problem to another problem. We need REM sleep for good mental and physical health. Forget the pill. Use a CPAP!

I find it interesting and hope I catch a report after the study is over. As long as I don't have to be a test subject I am cool with whatever. There should be choices in treatment if available then everyone can do what they prefer.

And if you don't sign on as a test case, who do you suggest should do so?

I could care less because there is always someone will to. You could be a candidate if you like.

When I googled dronabinol, there was a suggestion of a link with cannabinoids . Thus my THC comment.
The source itself might provide many benefits, but I would still use my machine after getting high.
