Circadiance Crowdfund To Produce Infant Focused CPAP Masks

Post by johnnygoodman » Wed Oct 01, 2014 8:29 am

Howdy All,

There are no CPAP masks on the market specifically designed for infants. Due to regulations and market size, the bigger companies have not stepped up to provide one. Nurses and doctors taking care of these children have been forced to use off label or improved solutions. These can leave sores and ulcers. Not good.

Circadiance is working to bring a proper and purpose designed mask to the market for these children. I think the world will be a better place once this exists and am happy they are taking it on. We've supported this effort.

As crowdfunding is a new thing and transparency is important in such efforts, here are important things to know:

1. This is a for profit venture by Circadiance. They are going to take your donations, build masks, give you the swag as listed by contribution amount and once produced, try to sell their CPAP masks for profit. If they profit, they keep it and you do not have debt or equity on their company as a result of your donation. If you feel that only a non-profit can be pure in this, then you should not donate. If you think "if this exists, we're all better, and the company who makes the product should make money too" then here's your chance.

2. CPAP.com's donation is being applied to our outstanding purchasing balance with Circadiance with volume discounts. We are not donating free and clear. I don't think this is proper to do given it is for profit. We do want to support it, we applaud CPAP manufacturers experimenting with crowd funding, this is how Circadiance wanted to approach it and it made sense to us.

With those "this is new and the money is real" caveats, I encourage you to check this out and consider it:

I am shocked because cpap was invented to deal with infant breathing issues!

To think of the bigger companies that have made millions from the technology, standing back;
---while a relatively minor player steps up to the plate to alleviate the suffering the "big guys"
cannot be bothered with.

I found it interesting that they set out on a 8 week crowd funding project and exceeded their original goal in the first 24 hours.

Crowdfunding is like that--word gets around very fast, and it happens all the time.
The sharks no longer run everything--it feels good.

The entire topic of bubble cpap and SiPAP type machines is quite interesting. It seems like since the early 2000s several companies have been in this market. I found this document interesting on the bonnet style headgear from CareFusion.

I wonder if Circadiance has a new approach or is just trying to fund their research to enter into this marketplace.

Only in silicone, but thanks for the info. As a between size adult I am painfully aware of the shortcomings of silicone.
I can see an advantage of cloth masks would be the flexibility and softness afforded only by this medium.
Cloth can be fabricated in a myriad of sizes, including custom sizes--all in a matter of hours, rather than weeks.
Silicone requires intricate manufacturing steps, sewing can be done anywhere.
Babies grow fast, and their faces change rapidly. I believe the niche is there.
