Needing CPAP machine (no insurance)
Needing CPAP machine (no insurance)
I just found out I need a CPAP and my insurance is canceling this month. Any recommendations to where I can find one super cheap or by donation??

The S8 machine posted here is a little out of date, but it is a good machine at a great price: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=100099&st=0&sk=t&sd ... nefit+dori
You might be able to get a better deal than this off Craigslist, but you will need to read enough to become an expert on the various CPAP machines and be patient until the right deal comes along. You can get good prices on more up-to-date CPAP machines at secondwindcpap.com (but they will cost a lot more than the first one I mentioned above). Our sponsor, CPAP.COM has good prices on new CPAPs, but they are obviously more expensive than the used options.
Do you have a copy of your sleep study report? If not, get a copy. Do you have a prescription? If not, then I definitely recommend the used S8 mentioned above - not only can you buy it without a prescription, but it is an autoset machine - which means that you can use it to figure out the best pressure settings for your treatment.

Thanks for the info. Yes, have a RX and my local supplier is searching for a used machine for me as well. They have a few sample supplies they can provide for free but still needing a machine. Any info I get I'll certainly run by them first. So happy there's at least something out there.
Re: Needing CPAP machine (no insurance)
Who is your insurance? Some buy the machine outright, if your does that would be great.alazydaisy1212 wrote:I just found out I need a CPAP and my insurance is canceling this month. Any recommendations to where I can find one super cheap or by donation??
Otherwise it is Craigslist or here on this forum people will sell off something. It is Buyer Beware either way.
Re: Needing CPAP machine (no insurance)
go over to apneasupport.org they have a link to the cpap donation program, for people that are in need, but can't afford a machine.alazydaisy1212 wrote:Thanks for the info. Stl Mark, the seller above, has established credibility on this forum and the proceeds are for a good cause.Nick Danger wrote:The S8 machine posted here is a little out of date, but it is a good machine at a great price: viewtopic.php?1&t=100099&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=benefit+dori

Check with your Dr's office to see if they have a no insurance program that you can get on. There's a few Docs in my area that have something called the Indigent program and we set them up on machines at no charge. You would have to use the machine as if your insurance was paying for it so if we see that you aren't using it then we would take the machine back.

With the accountable care act you should be able to COBRA, or if low income, possibly apply for Medicaid, or you can even apply for a health plan on the market place since you had a "Life Change" (loss of insurnace) which allows you to get a new policy on the marketpalce any time you need one.
It is almost impossible these days not to have insurnace of some kind with all the options that are available

Re: Needing CPAP machine (no insurance)
Cobra is expensive. Last time I checked, it was $600 a month for me. Back when I thought I was going to lose my insurance, I checked my options. The cheapest plan I could get, with subsidies, was still over $200 a month and $2000 deductible. If I had lost my insurance, I would have gone without. No way I could afford those costs.Paralel wrote:With the accountable care act you should be able to COBRA, or if low income, possibly apply for Medicaid, or you can even apply for a health plan on the market place since you had a "Life Change" (loss of insurnace) which allows you to get a new policy on the marketpalce any time you need one.

Just because there are options to buy, doesn't mean that somebody can afford to buy them.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?
Re: Needing CPAP machine (no insurance)
I'm betting if most people took a very hard look at their budgets they'd be surprised what they could afford with some changes in routine and lifestyle. It all depends on priorities.

Check the links in my signature line for what CPAP machines are good. Then check Craigslist. You'll see a lot of old junk machines at ridiculous prices, but I usually see a top of the line machine for $300 or less once a month or so within driving distance.
Learn to read the model numbers and labels to be sure you get the right machine. For instance, a Philips Respironics PRS1 Pro machine is pretty good, the PRS1 Plus machine is bad.
