Good mouth guard for mouth breathing?

Post by jwuzy » Tue Sep 30, 2014 10:59 am

Hi, what is a good mouth guard I can get to prevent mouth breathing? Looking for something around $20 or so...

Your dentist can answer that for you.

Many of us use blue painter's tape (it comes off easily), or 3M micropore tape (from the pharmacy). A little cheaper than devices . Were you planning on wearing a mouth guard at the same time as a mask? Mouth guards do nothing to keep your airway open, though dentists will tell you they're terrific.

Check some sporting goods stores or the sports section of stores like Walmart. Look for a cheap football mouth guard. Some are a boil & bite design or just plain. Should be only a few dollars.

If you have a nasal congestion problem, try doing nasal cleansing before bedtime and maybe turning down (or Off) the humidifier setting. Too much warm humidity can cause nasal congestion which in turn causes or contributes to mouth breathing.

Try the moldable mouthguard shown below and use a 1/2" VERTICAL strip of whatever kind of medical tape you like, mostly to keep the center of your lips together (if that is actually necessary).

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I am thinking about getting a mouth guard too. I am trying to keep my mouth closed while sleeping and do fine for most of the night but I have woke up clinching my teeth together to the point that they ache. I haven't tried taping because I'm allergic to tape, even the hypoallergenic kind. Thanks for posting this question.

Hubby's equipment: PR System One REMstar Auto A-Flex model 560P. Doctor's orders left it open 5-20. We changed it to 8-20 after a couple nights. Start Date was 1/30/15. Oh, mask is the new nasal pico.

Prior to cpap use I was a mouth breather. Once I started with cpap I slept with my mouth shut but the clinching started! I went from sleeping with my jaw totally relaxed and hanging open to jetting my jaw out and clinching. After a trip to the dentist I got a mouth guard for the clinching and now sleep with it and my cpap every night.

Fixing the clinching can help with the quality of sleep...and the morning ache in the teeth.
