Sore Jaw?

Post by lytepole » Mon Sep 22, 2014 12:16 pm

Hi!

I'm really glad I found this community. What a wealth of knowledge and info!

I'm almost a CPAP newbie. Still waiting for RX and equipment.

After my titration study this weekend, I have a question. For whatever reason, my jaw is killing me after that titration study. The first half of the night, I started out with a nasal mask, but after about 3 hours of sleeping with my mouth shut, I yawned or something and never got it closed back up all the way. SO, they switched me over to a FFM mid-night, which I had leaking issues with for awhile. Any time I moved at all with the FFM, the noise woke me up immediately, so they switched me back to the nasal mask. I asked about a chin strap, but only had about an hour left of the study, so they said not to worry about it. I continued to have some leaking issues with opening my mouth sometimes for the last hour.

While I had either mask on, I know I was at least concentrating part of the time to NOT move my mouth around and probably spent that last hour trying to make sure my mouth stayed shut. Do you think that is the cause of the sore jaw?

Is this something I should be discussing with doc or DME provider while picking out equipment?

Thanks!

I would see my PCP, or even my dentist. ASAP!
If the lab has somehow injured your jaw/joint, the fact needs to be established,
and if treatment is indicated, it needs to be prompt--and blame to be laid where it belongs.

Depending on what type of FFM you were using, opening your mouth may not make a difference. On my F&P 432, I can open my mouth without any issues and it is common for it to be partially open throughout the night. On a new mask that I tried a couple times the Quattro Air, opening my mouth causes leaks which kind of defeats the purpose of a FFM for me.

Did you get a copy of your Sleep Study? Sometimes it will say in it what masks they used.
Current Settings PS 4.0 over 10.6-18.0 (cmH2O) - Resmed S9 VPAP Auto w/h5i Humidifier - Quattro Air FFM
TNET Sleep Resource Pages - CPAP Machine Database
Put your equip in your Signature - SleepyHead v1.0.0-beta-1

You said you yawned and never got your mouth closed back all the way... did you mean you couldn't close it or were you being philosophical and mouth breathing? If you actually couldn't close it, you may have dislocated it and do need to see someone right away.

Thanks for the responses - Julie hit the nail on the head - It wasn't that I couldn't close it, I just didn't close it back up all the way after that middle of the night yawn while I was sleeping. Then, woke up with a sore jaw after a miserable night - my guess is that I was holding it closed tightly in the hope of not moving and causing a leak on either mask. After they switched out my mask, I was very aware of trying to not cause a leak again - especially with the FFM as every little movement I made (face, mouth, body, etc) ended up causing a leak and waking me up.

Maybe I just had a horrible FFM experience my first time? Or are there people with certain face shapes that just don't take to a FFM well?

More like certain FFMs that don't take to faces!
