Penitentiary Rules
If I get sent to the State Pen, will they let me bring my CPAP?

Re: Penitentiary Rules
I'm pretty sure they would supply one if medically necessary (their choice--not yours),
but your own machine would have to be thoroughly inspected for contraband,
as well as any other place one could hide something.
I hope you are kidding about prison--you really do seem harmless.

I think they just provide a room mate with a bellows and a hose. Keep him happy! Jim

Re: Penitentiary Rules
You know - this is a good question, and I've wondered this myself... I watch 'Lock Up' (documentaries about life in prisons) but have never seen or heard mentioned that apnea sufferers are allowed PAP devices.
CF - I'm not sure inmates would be allowed to have these in their cells because there are too many parts that can be used to make weapons.
Here's another thought that is sure to spark debate - should inmates on death row be allowed to use cpap if warranted?
Please -everyone, feel free to share your thoughts

Re: Penitentiary Rules
They use an alcohol swab before they put in the needle--yes, THAT needle!

Re: Penitentiary Rules
i think you would probably be assigned to a prison that has a hospital wing or medical segregation or something. they would have to treat the apnea in some fashion.

They won't need the needle just feed the gas into the XPAP machine.

Of course they will.TangledHose wrote:If I get sent to the State Pen, will they let me bring my CPAP?
However, they may have to put a cage around (or otherwise secure) the hose and wires so you can't hang yourself.

Definitely a cheaper option, GP, and oh so much more peacefulGoofproof wrote:They won't need the needle just feed the gas into the XPAP machine.
I was just doing some research on the topic- seems there are a few prisons that might be allowing it, in particular medical prisons. However, if an inmate is suicidal, then they may take the machine away for safety reasons. This seems counterproductive to me: depressed = not sleeping well = being more depressed = ...etc.
I haven't found anything yet that says is is 'mandatory' for prisons to allow it.

$ 35,000 to 40,000, housing, free medical, ect, ect. Sure beats working to support the dredges of society that won't lift a finger to pull their own weight.
Even under Obummer, the illegal aliens can't get that good a deal. If I was in charge of the prison system, I'd pattern them after China and the Soviet Union, except the people in my system WOULD BE GUILTY! Jim

Re: Penitentiary Rules
In Orange is the New Black, Episode 1, Season 1, there was an older inmate in a room shared by several prisoners who supposedly had a CPAP (as it's function is described by the character in the dialog though I don't recall it was called that), but the machine used in the show was actually an oxygen concentrator, not a CPAP, because (I'm guessing) a small little unit wasn't as dramatic as the big concentrator machine on tv. (Either that or a really dumb set decorator who didn't know the difference).
I imagine it depends on the prison and the type of security, but there would be an interesting legal issue if the prison was refusing to provide a medical need.
I had bilateral frozen shoulders a while back and could not put my hands behind my back. One of my big worries was that I would get arrested and charged with resisting arrest if I refused to put my hands behind my back for handcuffs. No, I don't do ANYTHING that could get me arrested, but it was still this irrational fear I had.

you'd likely have been tasered, beaten, and THEN charged with resisting.

Re: Penitentiary Rules
What a relief to know that someone else had the same thought as I have had. I had one frozen shoulder and the other shoulder with a rotator cuff tear. Even though I walk the straight and narrow, I was worried about being handcuffed behind my back too! How strange is that?Janknitz wrote:In Orange is the New Black, Episode 1, Season 1, there was an older inmate in a room shared by several prisoners who supposedly had a CPAP (as it's function is described by the character in the dialog though I don't recall it was called that), but the machine used in the show was actually an oxygen concentrator, not a CPAP, because (I'm guessing) a small little unit wasn't as dramatic as the big concentrator machine on tv. Have you read "Three Felonies a Day"?palerider wrote:in our current police state, it's not irrational...Janknitz wrote: No, I don't do ANYTHING that could get me arrested, but it was still this irrational fear I had.

Great book with many examples where an honest citizen, going peacefully about their business of leading a normal, productive life were charged with a felony and many of them were convicted. How can the average American commit three felonies in the course of a given day? Consider these hypothetical examples—along with their real-life parallels—in which vague and broad federal laws have made honest citizens into federal felons.
