Big consistent jump in AHI numbers
Big consistent jump in AHI numbers
Hello,
I am a relatively new CPAP user. At first it did not help at all and Iwas getting huge headaches each night. My AHI numbers were about 5 to 6 per night. The doctor increased my pressure to 8 and I changed mask and things got way better. For a couple of weeks I was really feeling better after these changes, staying awake while driving was much better, and my average AHI numbers were between 1 and 3. But suddenly, those numbers jumped up, and I started feeling so tired again, with all the other symptoms too. My average AHI numbers for the past two weeks is 8.8, and that seems to be slowly climbing higher and higher. The last few nights have been above 10. My doctor does not seem concerned with this, yet I am feeling lousy again. During my initial sleep study, my AHI was 45 per hour and 70 on my back. So, I guess 10 is better than that, except that I still feel just as tired now as I did back when I was having 45. I have had no changes in diet, exercise, etc., and my mask fit says 100%. Any ideas on why it would jump up suddenly like this and should I listen to my doctor that this big increase means nothing? I use a Philips Respironcis machine and a full face mask.
Thanks for any insights

Re: Big consistent jump in AHI numbers
Which model machine do you have? Please check the underside (remove water tank first) and give us the number after REF. If your machine has data, that will really help a lot to see what is going on.
Anything change in the last couple weeks? Different mask. Any changes in settings since the change to 8?

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?
Re: Big consistent jump in AHI numbers
OP has a Respironics machine that offers full data or they wouldn't be able to wonder about the increase in AHI that they are seeing.
It would be nice if we could see the software reports to know what is going on.
Like the breakdown in that AHI in to event categories.

Re: Big consistent jump in AHI numbers
I have a REMaster Auto DOM. REF 560P. The only words I see on my mask are F and P Simplus. It's a full face mask. There have been no real changes in the last two weeks except that I am much more tired now.
Thanks

When you get a chance can you add your equipment to your profile like I have mine.
The machine correct choice would be....PR System One 60 Series Auto CPAP
The humidifier choice would be....PR System One 60 Series Heated tube humidifier with heated tube (even if you don't have the optional heated hose right now)
SleepyHead works great with this machine for viewing the software reports. See my signature link for information on how to get it and how to use it.
For posting images of reports so we can see what you are seeing check out this thread along with some examples.

There's both a Windows and Mac version of SleepyHead.
We have zero idea what might be going on without at least looking at the report and comparing the previous low AHI night with a recent high AHI night.
We don't know what your settings are or if leaks or an issue or if maybe you are having a lot of awake events getting flagged by mistake.

Re: Big consistent jump in AHI numbers
I use "Mysleepmapper.com" for downloading my data and seeing the various graphs and such. Is that the same sort of thing you are speaking of with the software?
Thanks

Re: Big consistent jump in AHI numbers
SleepMapper data is severely limited.
Just gives the generic AHI and not the categories which are kinda important.
We don't know if the events are centrals (clear airway), obstructive apneas or hyponeas.
AHI all by itself doesn't tell us much. Can't see hours slept. Can't see if the therapy line is broken.
AHI works great if it's nice and low and a person feels good and sleeps good.
Doesn't work so great to only look at the AHI if a person is having problems.
SleepyHead software gives a LOT more data to maybe help out with figuring what may be going on.

Re: Big consistent jump in AHI numbers
Thanks for the reply. My hose has not gotten even warm to the touch so maybe there is something wrong with the hose or the device. I'll follow up with the DME.

Zohaa (catlover2?) There is nothing wrong with your heated hose, it does not get warm to the touch.
