Oracle filter replacement frequency

Post by photonic » Sun Sep 21, 2014 12:22 pm

Doing really well on the Oracle mask. There is a little filter at the elbow of the mask that over time gets little black dots on it and this is mentioned in the user guide. They do get darker and darker with time. (hmmm what makes them dark?)

My question is how often should I change this filter out. The mask comes with four replacement filters but I suspect that the mask will last way longer than the supply of filters.

BTW, I always take out the filter before washing the mask, therefore the color change is not from washing, but perhaps is from moisture from breathing and then mildew. But there is no odor of the blacked doted filter.

Thoughts?

I replace the filters at the same time I replace the white filter in my machine - about once a month.
The replacement frequency of the filter on your machine is a function of how much gunk it collects. If you are in a really clean environment, the rate is less than mine, if pretty dirty, it is more than mine. "Mileage will vary."
BTW, the "filter" is a diffuser that spreads out the exhaled air and makes it a little quieter.
Its use is optional so you could try using the mask without to see if the increased noise is bothersome.
I had a low cost source at one time. I'll see if I can find it and post a link.
https://www.cpap.com/productSearch.php?query=900HC439

The part number is 900HC439 and they cost roughly $6 for 10 at full retail. With the 4 that came with the mask, that should last until mask replacement time or longer - say 14 months.

For a while I was replacing masks every 2 months but now I am lasting about 9-10 months on a mask. As a result of the frequent change out, I have quite a few in stock - maybe 20 or so.

googling indicates that the filter is similar to what they do on the piliaro q, it just diffuses the air coming out of the mask. (great idea, that).

I'd suggest washing it in hot soapy water, and using another one while that one dries.

as to what makes it dark, it's filtering out some of whatever makes it through the cpap filters (and if you're not using the white fine filter on the PR machines, that's a fair amount) as well as anything your lungs might want to contribute to the airflow.

I guess that "diffuser" as F&P calls it doesn't actually improve the air quality, just reduce noise and spread the air out to not blow an air stream on someone.

It is optional to use the diffuser, according to F&P.

Thanks for all the replies. I think the manual says not to wash them but i am traveling and can't check. Perhaps they fall apart. Thanks for the source for more filters. Will have to try not using one and see what that sounds like.
