RESOLVED: Press speeds up, Remstar Pro CFlex+ Sys 1

Post by Bradsue » Sun Sep 21, 2014 7:09 am

This Remstar Pro CFlex + System One Machine will routinely speed up for a moment when using any CFlex or CFlex + setting (1, 2, 3). This is very disturbing, enough of a change to disrupt breathing. I replaced the filter (on back of machine) to no avail. Called an online repair number and they want me to send the machine in so they can give me an estimate. When I asked for possible causes they mentioned a circuit board or blower problem. A circuit board problem is more believable. A blower problem I doubt would not cause this burst to happen on a routine interval. I am very handy with repairs and would like to repair the CPA machine myself if possible. Has anyone else experienced this type of issue? What causes this to occur? Can it be repaired? Thanks, Bradsue

if it's the old 50 series, I've heard people having problems when the connections to the pressure and flow sensors get loose and don't seal like they should. the 60 series changed the design a bit and put a big honkin screw right over those connections, which tells me that there was a design flaw in the 50 series.

it's easy enough to reseat the sensors connections, two screws out of the bottom, pull the knob off, ease off the top cover. then two screws on the circuit board be mindful of the corner of the board over the air outlet, that's where the sensors are located, the larger sensor with two ports is the flow sensor, the smaller one with one port is the pressure sensor. make sure you get the little silicone boots back in place and get them seated well when you put the board back on... that's where the leaks develop

all applicable disclaimers apply, no user serviceable parts inside, do at your own risk, batteries not included, don't take my advice, I've never opened up a 50 series, just seen pictures (I have opened up a 60 though, which is where I noticed the big honkin screw they added). etc etc etc.

The pressure "speeding up for a moment" is a normal function of the machine when it thinks your flow rate has dropped due to any cause. This is how the machine helps you overcome obstructive apnea events. Notice also it will do this if you inhale and hold your breath to cough.

I'm not a good substitute for consulting your doctor. But I have the same machine and using the SleepyHead software I can see the pressure pulse events and they always correlate with my airflow ceasing for about ten seconds. Most of the time I sleep right through this but a few times it will wake me up. Knowing that it is the machine doing what it is designed to do helps me roll over and just go back to sleep without aggravation.

Palerider: I took your advice and reseated the rubber seal over the sensors. Problem Solved. Thank You. Bradsue

also good to have a bit of confirmation that the rumors I'd heard were accurate
