Chinstraps

Post by Amers605 » Fri Sep 19, 2014 5:23 pm

I am going to be try using a chinstrap soon (when I finally get it - insurance companies )
So I would like to hear about your experiences with chinstraps. What brands you liked/disliked.
If you have used the Puresom Ruby Chinstrap, please comment on what you thought. It was recommended by my sleep tech.
I do not know what my insurance company will send me.

I haven't used it in years, but the best one I found was PAP CAP from pur-sleep.com.

I tried several EBAY.com type discount chinstraps but eventually ended up with the Ruby Chinstrap. It's not terribly minimalist or elegant, however it does get the job done. My only issue with the Ruby is that they tend to run a little small, at least in my circumstance. I hear they now make an extra large version, which may just be a 'normal large' in other chinstraps. Pur-Sleep makes the PAP cap which a lot of people on this forum like quite a bit... I haven't tried it myself.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I have used Respironics, PaPCap, and Ruby.

The Respironics Chin strap didn't work for me at all. Maybe I didn't figure out how to adjust it just right. Or maybe my silky long hair made it slip and slide all night.

The PapCap was a bust for me. The material under the chin does not stretch so you have to cinch it up and then it pulls the entire cap forward over your eyes.

The RUBY worked best for me but the part at the chin has a nasty seam across the middle that makes it very uncomfortable. Couldn't make it through the night. I got a Pad-A-Cheek cover for the Ruby and it feels SOOOO much better. I use it when I have to use a nasal mask for whatever reason. If you end up with the RUBY, be sure to get the Pad-A-Cheek cover for it. Karen has made many for CPAP users.

I'm using the Halo chinstrap by Breathewear. Fits and works well. No seams to rub.

I can not find the pad a cheek made for chin straps. Do you have a link to it? I am allergic to mine and wake with my chin burning and red that turns into scabs. I really need the pad a cheek bad. Thanks Angela

I make my own from 3 inch non-adhesive Ace brand bandages. Check the links in my signature line.

My current set up is an Activa LT nasal mask, and I use a PapCap, but I do not use the chinstrap that comes with it, I substitute another one, which has wider fabric at the chin, so it kind of cups my chin. It makes it easier to stay in place and to adjust the angle of it. And I can pull part of the fabric over my lips.

I have found that keeping the jaw up and the lips closed can be addressed separately, and for me, the jaw staying up seems to be my biggest issue with leaks. I use one, small, piece of tape diagonnally across my closed lips, and then I put on the cap/chinstrap and then the mask. Using the piece of tape seems to allow me to have the chinstrap looser. It is actually pretty comfortable and my leak rate is generally quite good.
