congestion a side effect?

Post by tyroneshoes2 » Wed Sep 17, 2014 3:46 pm

Since CPAP I wake up with a little lung congestion. A single cough clears it, but it does not seem like a good thing.

About the only unlocked parameter on my S9 is humidity control, which the DME set to 78 and I have not changed.

Should I consider this and should I go up or down?

Try down, it should help, but if not, then try up.

That 78 is for temperature...degrees.
Sounds like you have the Climateline hose and when the only parameter you can change is temperature that means the machine is set to "automatic" and that means the machine will try to deliver 80% humidity at any temperature you select.
So changing the temperature won't change the humidity.
I don't know if changing just the temperature will change anything with the lung issue.
I don't even know if changing the humidity will change anything with the lung issue.

There is a way to change the settings to make the temperature and humidity controls independent of each other. You have to go into the clinical setup menu and take it off "automatic".

I would love to know how to do all that.

It is indeed climateline.

I understand that it is degrees; what I briefly read is that the unit allows changing that as a way of balancing both the temp and humidity in a single parameter. From that, I assume that changing it will change the humidity, but then I am a noobie and you guys are the experienced experts so I defer to your advice. I also do not know if changing either would be helpful, but my options here appear to be limited, and it feels like some sort of adjustment might be in order. I also do not expect much hand-holding from the DMEs, and not surprisingly, there hasn't been much of that so far.

At some point I want to be able to tinker with everything, but only if I really understand the ramifications would that be safe. Since the learning curve here is much steeper than I would have assumed, I guess that it might take some time to get to that point. I have the time, and the motivation.

But anything you can tell me about how to do this would be most appreciated. This forum and its members is awesome.

It used to be that more heat equaled more humidity but that's not the case with these new machines that have sensors in the end of the hose to measure the air temp and the humidity.
When in automatic mode...which is the factory default mode when the Climateline is plugged in...the S9 will try its best to maintain 80% humidity no matter what the temperature selected.
I called ResMed a while back just to make sure that was what I was reading and understanding.

I am currently using a S9 machine and climateline hose. I like the 80% humidity but I don't like the warmer temps in the summer so I turned it down as far as it would go temperature wise during the warm weather and now that things are cooling off I have increased the temperature. This winter when my bedroom is cold...I will be using temps in the 80s.
My nose doesn't like less humidity and it has been just fine this summer with 64 degrees setting...so I am pretty sure that I have been getting 80 % humidity. Otherwise my nose would be giving me fits. I discovered this years ago when I would let the water chamber go dry during the night. Nose not happy at all when it gets dried out.

No hand holding from my DME! My humidifier was set as "automatic" and my nose was having fits, I could not get it regulated to a good balance between temperature and humidity until I changed the setting from "automatic" to manual mode. I just did a google search and found a video that explains how to switch from automatic to manual.

Once I was in manual mode I set the temperature to the room temperature and the humidity level to 4. Settings are a personal preference but once you are in manual mode you can play around with the settings to see what works for you.
