advice for my new user friend

Post by Bonnie » Wed Sep 17, 2014 1:19 pm

My friend was diagnosed recently with sleep apnea. Her doctor prescribed the Resmed Elite Auto with humidifier. I had suggested the S9 with the capability of seeing more data, types of events, leak data, etc. Her doctor told her she had a few centrals and the S9 wouldn't handle them. He also told her he had sleep apnea that went away when he lost weight and told her to do the same. I consider this doctor uninformed so I'm questioning his machine choice. Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks!

your terminology is all messed up.

there is no 'elite auto' there's the elite, and there's the escape auto, and the autoset, like you have.

they're *all* s9 models. (there are 13 basic s9 models)

which are you talking about?

the elite and autoset both have complete data, anything that says 'escape" doesn't.

I am not familiar with an Elite Auto. What is it.
I would recommend the AirSense 10 for her, the newest addition to the Resmed line.

If your friend was offered the Escape Auto , I would recommend refusing it, even if it requires a new doctor to get a prescription for a decent machine.
Where your friend lives, her insurance and her financial circumstance may all impact her situation.

I agree with the preceding posters. Don't let your friend accept a ResMed machine that has the name Escape in it. It is extremely rare for people to be "cured" of sleep apnea simply by loosing weight, IMO.

It may be that her doc, like many, feel that seeing any data is unimportant for the patient to see or understand. There is a new model (S10) coming soon - I don't think new is as important as having the data to see on a daily basis until this therapy is working and effective.

Why not have your friend come here so she can understand more about getting a copy of her sleep study and prescription so she will know exactly what kind of event were detected at her sleep study. Check cpap dot com for cpap makes and models and their data specs.

I suspect the Airsense 10 "cpap" model is the brick of the Airsense 10 line. Perhaps someone can confirm that?

HI BONNIE!!!

Good to see you here again. (I know you stop in from time to time)

My suggestion for your friend........get a different doctor! And, I agree with what the others said.

And, thanks for posting because I quoted your "saying" in your comments section the other day when someone said they slept without their machine and "slept like a baby"......but, I couldn't remember which forum member had that saying in their profile.

Consider it confirmed.

So far these are the new AirSense models

AirSense 10 CPAP......this is like the S9 Escape
AirSense 10 Elite
AirSense 10 AutoSet
Airsense 10 AutoSet for Her

The bilevel devices scheduled for release a little later are called AirCurve

AirCurve 10 S (like the VPAP S)
AirCurve 10 VAuto
AirCurve 10 ASV

So far the only dog in the bunch appears to be the AirSense 10 CPAP in terms of data capabilities.

Sorry, it is the Escape he prescribed. She will be joining the forum, we just talked about it yesterday. She's not yet familiar with terminology, had a home sleep study. My concern was the comments made by the doctor that my machine would not handle the centrals, is that true? Is there a particular model better suited for centrals? I know the Escape isn't the greatest which is why I didn't want her to stuck with that model. As a new user there is so much they don't know and we who have been doing this for long periods of time can sometimes forget how overwhelming this process can be in the beginning. I just want to make sure she gets a machine that will give her the ability to take charge of her therapy and have the data she'll need to adjust accordingly. With the help of this forum and her determination I'm confident she'll do well.

He's concerned about the "Centrals" and he prescribed her a FRIGGIN' ESCAPE?????? WTF?

Don't let her accept the Escape (in any form). This doctor is a moron.

How many Centrals? If they're very minimal, that's not a real problem. If they're substantial, then she should have been prescribed something like an ASV machine.

Hi Den!
I do stop by from time to time. I have to keep up with all that's new. Read reviews, etc. I am at the same place with my therapy and have the attitude, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. My AHI is still below 1, usually .5 and is pretty consistent. No issues with masks, machines, data, etc. I'd have to say my apnea is right where I like it, pretty boring! (and it happened mostly with your help and others here, some who are no longer here or posting) Hope all is well with you and retirement. I'll send you a PM soon and tell you how I finally was able to retire . Off to take a nap, not that I need one but because I can.

Hey, you are getting really good at mind reading.

Correct...it's a dog because it's a brick.

So far I haven't seen any evidence of the almost brick Escape Auto in the AirSense line...but they could still add it later.

Sometimes I wonder if ResMAD just collects their "sub-standard", left-over parts (aka "floor sweepings") and tries to come up with a way of foisting them off on the poor, unsuspecting users. Any profit is better than none. Ethics be damned. Then, they get doctors like this one to conspire with them. Grrrrrr......
