New CPAP user

Post by crakka15 » Tue Sep 16, 2014 6:49 pm

Hello...Been lurking around here for sometime now and figured Id introduce myself. Im 27 and was diagnosed recently with sleep apnea. During my study I was told I had over 60 apnea events per hour which is pretty bad from what I have heard.

My first exposure with cpap was during my tritation study where they figure out your pressure level and that night was LIFE CHANGING. I work in a very high stress job for the DoD and I have been dealing with falling asleep while driving, to having to skip my lunch hours to go to my car to catch a hour long nap to being dead tired at 5pm everyday. I just got fed up with it and after one night on this CPAP machine I felt like a million bucks for the first time in 3 years.

So my DR finally sent my order over to my medical supplier and they gave me a ResMed S9 Escape Auto with H5i Humidifier. I have the ResMed Mirage Ultra Large Full mask as well. I have used this machine for the first time last night and I felt amazing in the morning so it must be working anyone have any experience with this machine? I also found a person near by me that 2 used S9 Autoset and one S9 Elite model for sale with low hours for 250.00 ea. Im thinking about getting one of these as I do a fair amount of traveling so I would like to have a machine that I use for travel. Is that OK to do or should I stick with the same machine. Also is 250.00 a fair price for the S9 Autoset/Elite?

The S9 Escape is an almost brick....no useful data beyond how many hours you use it and generic AHI.

$250 for the S9 AutoSet is a fair price if it includes the humidifier. That's also a full data machine so if you ever wanted to evaluate your therapy for some reason then you would have the data available.
Software is easy to obtain. Check out my signature line for information on SleepyHead software which works just fine with the AutoSet.

The S9 Elite is a full data machine also but it only has cpap mode available.
The S9 AutoSet is a full data machine that also has cpap mode plus apap mode...so it's like 2 machines in one.

You might want to check the hours of use on the machine for sale to make sure it doesn't have a gazillion hours on it.
Run hours and not therapy hours is what to look for. You can play with your Escape to figure out how to get to the run hours.
This explains how.

crakka is saying s/he has the Escape Auto. So not a total brick but crakka if you can, try to exchange for the Autoset -- that is the full treatment data model. The Escape Auto has some limitations in its functionality and does not show leak data, nor does it break down your AHI by event type (obstructive apnea, hypopnea, clear airway apnea). Worth having all the treatment data available should you want to see it at some point.

so other than not having the data reporting features they are pretty much the same machine correct?

Yes the S9 Autoset and Elites all have H5i's with them. How many hours is too many hours for a used machine??

No, they really aren't pretty much the same.
The Escape Auto uses an older algorithm and the AutoSet uses a new and improved algorithm.

go here and plug the 2 in and look at the feature comparison.

so i plugged in the two models at the link you sent me above and the only thing the Escape Auto seems to be missing minus the data reporting is the start and stop feature and mask fit feature...everything else seems to be the same across the board...maybe im just confused?

And, in case you want to look it up on Cpap.com, your mask (same as mine... see under my note here) is an UltraMirage, not a Mirage (diff. mask entirely) Ultra anything. But it's quite understandable!

Look all the way down at the bottom for Algorithm.

It's a bit difficult to explain but the older algorithm was more limited in how it addressed apneas along with what it reported. Trust me.

The Escape Auto isn't a horrible machine...but the S9 AutoSet is a better machine.

the escape auto provides no useful data so that you can see if it's working.
the escape auto uses the old s8 algorithm, which can't detect central apneas, so it won't go beyond 10cm pressure if you have an apnea, because that was the old cutoff just in case you might be having central apneas.

it's a much less capable unit. it's given to people that don't know any better, so that the DME can make a bigger profit.

if you want to keep it, that's up to you. I'd much rather have an elite (in fact, I have one) than an escape auto.

Price point is what I go by when evaluating hours of use. If it's cheap enough 3,000 hours doesn't scare me.
If someone is asking close to what I can buy that machine online for....it had better be really low hours though.
$250...and it includes humidifier, carrying case, etc. I wouldn't be afraid of 2,000 hours at that price. If it's less than 300 hours...heckuva good deal.

Run hours are in the Service menu.
Hold down the little "i" button and the little button with the 2 check marks simultaneously for a few seconds (maybe 5 or 10) until you see the Sleep Quality menu show up...then scroll down on the left to the little picture of a wrench is and highlight it and then punch the round knob....That's the Service menu and run hours is in there.

So I called my medical supplier today and after some arguing that that escape did not do some of the data collection and other things that the Auto set model does...they are finally ordering me a brand new autoset model from ResMed.
