waking up out of breath

Post by dougndoug » Mon Sep 15, 2014 3:19 am

hello. one of my main symptoms bringing me to get a sleep study was waking out of breath and chest a little tight.

i was hopeful my diagnosis of needing cpap would resolve this, but it doesn't seem to have. 5-10 minutes after waking. i catch my breath and chest tightness subsides and i go about my day. it's a little more unsettling now that the cpap hasn't resolved this.

my sleepyhead charts look good - low ahi and no events. has anyone heard of these symptoms before, or have any ideas? thank you

Go see your doctor! Don't fool around with potential cardiac/respiratory issues on a forum of random strangers. Even if 10 people here have had vaguely similar symptoms (and yours are vague in medicalese) their experiences, diagnoses, outcomes, history, etc. are going to be different from yours. You said you had the symptoms before even being tested, and they're not sleep apnea symptoms in any case, so you need to see a doctor. Now. Not all serious events come with warnings.

A high proportion of heart attacks are known to occur in the early morning btw.

Discuss it with your doctor. The symptoms could be heart problems.

How long have you been on CPAP?

Please check the link in my signature line and fill in the equipment on your profile.

A good cardiologist, and a stress test would be your best option. Don't fool around, heart cells are some of the only cells that the body doesn't replace. Once the damage is done, you live with it the rest of your life. Heart disease, and sleep apnea seem to walk hand in hand with each other. I have had two heart attacks in my lifetime, the first at age 32, believe me it is not fun to live with reduced heart function every day for the rest of your life...especially if like me, you were very active before the heart attack.

Be pro active about your health... you only have one heart, take care of it before it is too late.

As others have stated go see a cardiologist just to make sure everything is ok. This way you can rule this out, but make sure the do more than just an EKG.

Please fill out your profile with all of your equipment and the specific settings in your machine. We need to know more.

And, it wouldn't be a bad idea to consult with your doctor.
