adjust heated hose on F&P Primo?

Post by sleepyandtired » Fri Sep 12, 2014 12:45 pm

I'm a new CPAP user and am having issues with condensation on the vent at the end of the heated hose and in the nasal pillow. I've tried adjusting the humidity settings all the way down to '1' and the issue remains so I think I need to adjust the heat on the hose. However, I can't figure out how to do so. What am I missing? I've called the DME and they are having me try moving the 'boost' to 1 but it isn't clear to me how that will help.
If I turn off the humidity, their is no condensation problem but my nose and throat are dried out in the morning.

I suspect they need to give me a different model with temp controls on the tubing - any opinions on which I should make them give me? I'm not worried about cost as so long as the treatment is covered, it is covered 100% by my insurance.
Thanks, Jon

Bumps in the road thread viewtopic/t94035/Pugsys-Pointers-3Deali ... -road.html

See the above thread posts # 2 and # 3 for some ideas on dealing with the condensation.

You didn't say which nasal pillow mask you were using but you might consider the barrel cozy from Padacheek.

I am not familiar with how a heated hose works with the F & P machines. Does it even have a heated hose option?

The Fisher-Paykel Icon+ Premo appears to only come with their version of the heated hose.
Setting the humidity level appears to control the heated hose performance. Look at pages a-4 and a-5 of the user manual for what limited description is available. There seems to be no meaningful description of what "boost" actually does.

If you don't have a manual, here is a link to a F-P page that has a link to the manual on the lower right side.

Insulating the hose may help as might insulating whatever parts of the mask can be.

Thanks, I've read the manual and have tried fiddling with the 'boost' settings despite having no idea what that setting actually does. It sounds like there is no way to adjust the temp of the heated hose so I'm going to have the DME give me a different model to see if that helps. The barrel cozy also seems like an interesting idea and potential solution if a different model doesn't do the job.

Thanks, Jon

I've been using the F&P Icon series for some time, there is no separate control for the heated hose, what you can control as you know is the humidity level. You can go from zero (no humidity) up to level 7 which is full humidity. The default is level 4 and in addition there are three levels of boost.....think of boost like the three front sprockets on a modern bicycle, you can have your seven levels of humidity (rear sprockets) on boost level one (the front sprocket), or you can have your seven levels of humidity on boost level number two......etc.....so in reality there are 21 combinations to use. Boost level two or medium is default and for most patients on cpap that should work just fine, so don't bother with low or high, medium with the seven humidity levels should cover you -- the other levels (low & high) are for more extreme cases.

The heated hose if it's working properly will get warm to the touch....mine gets warmer to the touch than the ClimateLine heated hose does on my ResMed S9, so if you can't feel the hose getting somewhat warm then it is either not connected at the elbow properly or the heated hose is not working. Check the hose connection at the machine end (elbow) and make sure everything is properly connected. I used to use an older Philips machine that did not have a heated hose and I would often get rain out in the hose, so I tried a hose cover, that did help to some degree, but when I started using the F&P Icon series with the heated hose I never had rainout or condensation in the hose again and that's with no cover on the hose. My point being if your heated hose is working properly you should be able to adjust your humidity level and not have a rainout problem unless you live in a swamp ;+)

Thanks for the reply. My hose has not gotten even warm to the touch so maybe there is something wrong with the hose or the device. I'll follow up with the DME.

Just to provide follow-up on this for anyone interested or for future readers who check the archives...
I did try swapping my F&P and hose with a replacement unit and found no improvement. My DME agreed to swap our for an entirely different unit which we agreed would be the resmed S9 as it can be configured to manually set humidity and hose temp independently. For what it's worth, 3 nights with the resmed on auto and I've experienced no issues and my AHI is lower. Hopefully this will continue to be successful over time and seasons.
