I am a mouth breather not only sleeping but in regular life as well

It will take a lot of conscious effort and time to correct this to nose breathing without conscious thinking about it.

Anyone else use strap AND tape?
I use Nexcare's "gentle paper" tape. As long as you're not applying too much pressure when sealing, removing the tape shouldn't be painful. I also use a chin strap and tape. I tried using tape without a chin strap but found that the chin strap did a great job at keeping the headgear in place.

Use Johnson&Johnson heavy duty silk tape...purse lips together and apply 2-3 inch strip vertically with bottom folded tag for easy removal.

So I have looked around for ways to improve my sleep apnea.
I have read around that people are taping their mouth shut to prevent mouth breathing.

I was originally planning on using scotch tape or electrical tape, but it appears there is special tape for this purpose?
Like medical tape?

What is the best brand?

Amazon has a bunch of nexcare medical tapes, are they good?

Please recommend something that is good for sensitive skin; my skin gets dry and breaks out very easily.
Thanks!
Had a friend many years ago that taped his mouth shut and vomited, inhaling same. He died. Personally I would use a full face mask to offset mouth breathing although I am not sure exactly how much safer it is in empirical terms. I use the Quattro FFM and love it. I also have several different kinds of tape, a PAPCAP and other assorted contraptions intended to keep my mouth sealed while sleeping. They were all a pain in the butt to use. The Quattro is, in and of itself, a great solution to the problem and is especially useful if you have allergies or a cold (love my humidifier for when I have a cold... heated high humidity air... great for a cold. No coughing. Clear chest in the morning. Etc.

Would paper tape or durable cloth tape be better or is there anything better yet?

why does this work isn't it about re positioning the jaw does tape just increase the effectiveness of nasal masks ..does this work with full face i thought both other treatments dental and elastic just repositioning the jaw moving and tensioning the neck by somehow lifting it or something ,Is it about concentrating the air pressure in one region or the old mask slip off the chin ?

Pretty much everything that works has been mentioned in this FOUR year old thread.
I can only add that brand name is superior to generics, which often stink, or don't stick.

Just curious if anyone using a FFM has tried plastic food wrap instead of tape? I tried in one night and it seemed to work good but for some reason I woke up and removed it. I plan on trying it again.

My thought exactly.

I guess since you dont use a FFM you are unable to try the foodd wrap in lieu of tape.

I have 2 FFMs and would never stick food wrap around my face .. The whole point of a FFM is that you can breathe through your mouth ...

I agree with librarylady. Nexcare Gentle Paper tape is anything but gentle. I've been using it in conjunction with my P10 nasal mask and a chin strap. It's pretty effective, but getting it off in the morning is miserable. Slow or fast, doesn't matter - you're taking a couple of layers of skin with it.....well, not really - it just feels that way. But I do have a couple of places on my check where it has made sores that bled the next day. My lips are pretty sore from it, too.

I would like to hear of some other products to try. For now, I'm going to give a shot to using the Scunci headband trick that a few other folks have recommended. Got a package today and I will run this experiment tonight and post the results.

May as well keep this ancient thread going. 🙂

There's no doubt that SomniFix is the Cadillac of tapes for our application. It's a high quality product. Very comfortable in all aspects, including removal. Pricey. Didn't work for me, I'm a hardcore case. If it's easy to remove, my jaw drop will overpower it.

I use 3M micropore, it's anything but gentle but it gets the job done for me. As a bonus, it's very inexpensive. I've been working on a 12 pack ($10)all year.

There are numerous Nexcare tape products out there. I've tried two; Nexcare Sensitive Skin, and Nexcare waterproof foam, both recommended here. Neither fit the bill for me. Again, these are on the pricey side. (Calculate the price per foot)

You should try rolling your lips under(pursing), when applying the tape. Keeps the tape off your lips, and creates a better seal IMO. Keeps moisture off the tape. Also wash your face before bed if you don't already. Amazing how much difference this made for me. Tape holds up through the night nearly every night for me.

Really, asking what tape is best is no different than asking what mask is best. Different for everyone. Good luck to you in your search.
