Nervous

Post by reevesfarm » Mon Sep 01, 2014 4:36 pm

I had my first sleep study Friday night, got a call first thing this morning from a rather brusk man telling me that I needed to come back for a 2nd. I only had the study done because it is a prerequisite for Lap Band surgery and was stunned when I got the call this morning. The guy from the clinic told me that I could come back tonight and seemed annoyed that I asked him questions about why...treated me like a moron. A big change from every other person associated with this clinic. I really just wanted to know what in my first study indicated a need for a 2nd. He mentioned something about my O2 sat dropping and said I was very restless or something like that...he clearly didn't want to answer my questions. I didn't know and he didn't mention things like RDI or what my actual O2 levels were. I will have to leave here in an hour to drive 60 miles to the hospital for my second test and have no idea what to expect. Is there any reason to have a second night if you don't need a CPAP?

Any info would be appreciated...I have zero experience with this and am anxious.

Likely they found sleep apnea and tonight's study is to have you sleep with a cpap machine so they can determine the pressure settings that you need to treat it.

We're here to help -- stick around and ask questions.

Your surgery may or may not automatically get rid of the need for Cpap, and even if it does, it may not be immediate, so I would certainly use it until you know for sure that you don't need it (and that would need to be based not on your having lost weight, but on another sleep study). Weight loss alone is highly unlikely to do the full job, even if you end up needing lower pressures to do it.

What sucks is that they really can't tell you much of anything. All the data has to be reviewed by the Dr. My guess is they probably did pick up some apnea and you will be on a CPAP. I only had one study and showed severe apnea. I was hooked up to a CPAP within hours of starting the study. It was almost a week later that my Dr got all the results and I was told my O2 dropped down to 74%. After I was on the CPAP I went into REM sleep. I am now just going on 4 weeks into my therapy and feeling so much better.
I hope things work out for you.

The best news could be that they found about your apnea and will help you treat it. Ignore the one bad apple...

If you've gone through the psych tests for the stomach surgery and they've determined you're a good lap band candidate, then you'll probably adapt well to using a CPAP. Among other traits, they test for psychological flexibility and perseverance - both of which will help you with CPAP, as well as with the lap band surgery. Another plus is that treating the sleep apnea may make it easier to lose weight and make the lifestyle changes necessary for success with the lap band.

Best news is that she Doesn't have sleep apnea and she has an alternate issue that can be treated. Don't wish sleep apnea on to anybody! Just sayin'

I do have sleep apnea and while she (the very nice tech) only had vague data she said that mine had to be moderate to severe for them to bring me back. She mentioned that she saw one instance of my O2 dropping to 84% but that she wasn't sure that was my lowest and that I spend a lot of time restless.

I am not worried about this at all...I will wear a mask and my life will get better, period. There are worse things....

I was only tense yesterday because the guy that called was so rude and almost intentionally vague that he made me wonder if something worse wasn't going on.

No worries, glad to find this site. I know that it will be invaluable in helping me decide about masks and machines...Thanks again!

I may be all wet, but your nightmares with cpap may be very closely connected
with your tragic hospital visits.
Wearing the mask might be less traumatic if you are wearing a mask liner and strap liners.
(Pad a Cheek) fabric would be warmer and softer than the naked mask,
and the subconscious link to your sad experiences may weaken.
If you can manage to get back to using the cpap, it could help with your post-op recovery,
and the reduced stress hormones could help with everything else.
Just add fleece and know you are wrapped in love.

Call the receptionist at the doctor's office and tell them that this man is never to contact you again.

My guess is that he is a scheduler and only knows that he has to call and schedule the titration study. If it was me, I would suggest to the facility that the scheduler be given an appropriate "script" to respond to patients questions.

He is the guy that "relieves" the night staff and apparently his attitude it not limited to patients. I am no shrinking violet and he will not have a chance to speak to me that way again. In addition I mentioned him in the survey, to my techs (great techs) and plan to drop his name when I see the pulmonologist. I am guessing I am not the first person to be annoyed by "Paul".
