Auto-CPAP vs. Bi-Pap

Post by pdeli » Mon Sep 01, 2014 1:46 pm

My question may be already buried somewhere here, but can someone tell me the distinction between the two above therapies?

Phil

yes, it's been answered many many many times.

an auto-cpap gives you one pressure that varies based on your needs throughout the night.

a bilevel (bipap is a respironics trademark name) gives you one pressure for inhale, another pressure for exhale, and switches between them on every breath.

I knew that, but those sound pretty much the same to me.

Bi Pap is one fixed pressure inhale and one exhale I think. Auto varies inhale based on sensed blockages and just backs off exhale by a fixed amount (1-3 cmd). My APAP is set at 10-20 with -3 exhale relief...

Sorry but I'm still not seeing the distinction here. As far as I can tell both therapies vary IPAP and EPAP based on patient's needs.

BiPap (bilevel) is 2 distinct different pressures...one for inhale and one for exhale and the difference between them can be as little as 1 cm or up to 8 cm (I think with the Respironics..don't hold me to that number as it might be greater).
These 2 different pressures can vary or they can be fixed...so they can function like a fixed cpap mode machine in that they never vary or they can vary or auto adjust as needed like an apap mode machine does.

APAP machines...are a single pressure machine that can auto adjust that pressure as needed.
While exhale relief (EPR in the ResMed and Flex in Respironics) can reduce the pressure on exhale it is still considered a single pressure machine.

Here's what a bilevel Respironics report looks like in auto mode that self adjusts as needed. I don't have an apap report handy in SleepyHead but it only shows one pressure line and not 2.

You are correct. They are the same. Don't let these people fool you.

so, a single pressure that varies over a period of many minutes, sounds the same to you as two distinct pressures that the machine flips between breath by breath?

in that case, there's really nothing more to be said.

If you find my questions annoying or troublesome perhaps you should just ignore this thread and take your combative responses somewhere else.

you sound a lot like someone else... hmm.

if you're shown an orange, and an apple, and you say you can't see any difference in them, because they've both got seeds, and they're both fruit....

what kind of explaination do you think would help you to see the obvious difference?

I have no idea what that means or who "someone else " is, but I've seen some of your other posts and it would appear that you must think that ridicule is helpful. If your intent is to put a sour tone on this site, it would seem to me that you have been successful.

I don't understand why you are otherwise here.

As someone with a learning disability, I find your snide remarks humiliating.
