what doctor

Post by Jennieandayla » Mon Sep 01, 2014 4:16 am

6 years ago after I went through everything from sleep studies to hearing tests to allergists, I got my script for my cpap.

I've moved though and my script is expired.

Do I need to go through everything all over again or should my regular family practice doctor be able o just write a new script for me?

Any doctor can write the prescription for you. Take your sleep study info with you and ask them.

The question will be whether your insurance will cover it without a recent sleep study. Some will. Some won't. If paying out of pocket, it won't matter.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Can you post your current equipment list? There is a link on how to do it in my signature block.
Since your current machine is 6 years old, there have been great changes in the machines and sometimes the particular model doesn't show up when you register. It that happens, then just post the information in the comments area.

Are you monitoring the data using software? If you are, then that will be helpful in getting reimbursement especially if you are using the software that is made by the same manufacturer as your machine - insurance companies like that.
If it is a Respironics machine - the software is called Encore and only runs on Windows
If it is a ResMed machine - the software if called ResScan and also only runs on Windows.
Otherwise, you can use SleepyHead which has both Windows and Mac versions.

If you have questions about how well you are doing, it helps to post images of your reports to illustrate the area of concern.
The is a link on how to do that in my signature block also. It uses PhotoBucket.com, a free image site. You'll have to register with them first, but, as I said, its no cost.

Thank you both.

No I don't have any data for it. The ent office took the SD card once and then I never got it back!! I was so mad.

Its a remstar system one. I dont need the humidity.

I've been "servicing" it myself. Taking it apart and using an air compressor to blow out the compressor and the chambers and everything.

The biggest problem I'm having is it is overheating. But not the whole thing and not the power brick, its the little power connector that connects the compressor to the computer board. It gets scalding hot and it had light burn marks. I'm terrified of using it anymore but even more terrified not using it. I had 230 episodes per hour at mg last sleep study (both central and obstructive) and my pressure is 11 and I'm afraid with out my machine I wouldn't wake up ever again!

First things first. Do you have a replacement SD card?

If not, here a a couple of links.
SD card Sources
SD at Amazon
SD at Office Supply

Any 2 GB SD card will work.

Next, can you register your equipment? There's a link on doing that in my signature block.

Do you have any way of getting a cpap on rent for a short time or purchasing a used machine while your machine is repaired? From time to time, used machines are made available on this forum at reasonable prices.

It may be more cost effective to just replace your current machine before it fails completely.

Do your know your pressure settings?

We also need to know your machine type. Take the water tank out, if you have the humidifier. Look on the bottom or back of the blower unit for a label with a number like REF 460P. Tell us what it says.

Do you still have a copy of your prescription? That should have your pressure settings.

You may be able to find a similar machine on your local Craigslist. Look for a Philips Respironics System One (PRS1) Auto machine or a ResMed S9 AutoSet (not Escape Auto). You might be able to find a good machine for $300 or so, but you'll probably also see a lot of people trying to sell old, junky machines for way too much money. Keep looking, you may get a good price for a good unit eventually.

I had electrical problems with my very old M series (way back before I found this forum) so I understand the 'can't live with it or without it' feeling. If its a connector with wires, can you separate the wires, cut them then 'rewire' them using electrical tape? I'm not sure of what connection you are describing so I'm not sure if this is possible. Mine had wiring that shorted out so I did this, cut the burnt areas, rewired with electrical tape & got it back together & it worked.

Before you try this, please remember it may not work for you. I got lucky. After I started my 'rewiring' I got a smoke detector & mounted it on the wall just above my machine. My CPAP was this way about a year before it was time for insurance to replace it. It was before I found this forum & I was so ignorant of the process I didn't know I could purchase one myself. If you do try this, please try to get a new machine ASAP. This is NOT SAFE & I just got lucky that I didn't have a fire.

If you think the machine will hang on until you can get one, just try to wait it out. However if not, this is one option.

Another option is trying to rent a machine locally while you are in the process of getting a new one. Whatever you do, don't sleep without it, with that many events, not only will you feel awful, it just isn't safe. If your insurance presents problems, with a prescription you can order a machine online from our hosts, cpap.com. They can supply you with all the billing codes for you to try to get your insurance to reimburse you.

Please consider registering & joining the forum. We can help you best if you fill in your equipment in the User Control Panel. That way it appears below each of your posts like mine below in blue. Also let us know what happens for you. Hopefully your insurance will accept your old sleep study & not require a new one.

Welcome to the forum.
Jen

Are you sure about that number? An event has to be at least 10 seconds long to be counted. 320 events in an hour is pretty extreme. I have not seen anything above 130, and that is pretty high.

Could it be that you had 230 episodes during the time you slept, and not per hour? Do you have a copy of your sleep study?
