New machines

Post by KSMike » Sun Aug 31, 2014 2:23 pm

My M-Series (with A-Flex - I don't know why my machine isn't showing in my signature...) turned 5 years old this past February, which I roughly calculate to about 13,000 hours. I figure it's about time to consider a new APAP, but have been so happy with my M-Series that I haven't kept up with new models. I don't want to lose the ability to change my own settings, keep & analyze my own data, etc. What are the current machines that would support those same capabilities?

I use the PRS1 560.. full data efficacy. I started my therapy with this past February. There is the s9 Autoset made by Resmed, and they just came out with the S10 a couple months ago ... I know nothing about those machines except that they are the newest... some versions of the S9 are bricks.

it's not showing in the sig because those are marketing links that cpap.com uses to help increase sales. if they're not selling it anymore, the links don't work.. just put it in the comments section

the newer respironics machines are much better, easier to change your settings, and provide *MUCH* more data than the old M machines did.

same with the new resmed machines. (s9 and airsense 10 line)

just stay away from anything from respironics labeled "plus" or anything from resmed that says "escape".

the 560 auto from respironics is good, as is the s9 autoset

Thanks palerider, I didn't understand that because it did continue to be included for a long time after the M-Series was no longer available.

Wait -- be patient.

All the existing upper level machines with data will do the same or better than your old machine, but even the current ones are pretty old and due for a refresh. The S10 just came out from ResMed and PR is long overdue for a new model. The DeVilbiss and Fisher Paykel are even longer overdue for new models. If it were me I would definitely stick it out on the old machine until the new batch of xPAP models comes out -- hopefully very soon.

Great thought on waiting for new models. However there are a couple of considerations. First, I've seen where new models have come out and people have had problems with them. I don't want to buy an old clunker, but I also don't care much for bleeding edge. Second, my insurance co-pays tend to get satisfied about this time of year and it would be nice to have it covered by insurance. I'm not sure I want to wait another year.

I had considered the "bleeding edge" issue, but competitive bidding in my area is too close for comfort.
I also need to justify my substantial contribution to Medicare.

The links to the old discontinued equipment worked for a long, long time after the equipment was no longer available.
For some reason they don't work now. It happened a while back after we lost all equipment for a short period of time when the forum had a software hiccup that was pretty big. At first it was just machines but now it includes discontinued masks...the links are broken.

Since you have been using the M series machine for a long time and are used to and comfortable with the Respironics way of doing things then I would suggest sticking with Respironics. It's familiar.
The ResMed S9 and I would assume the newest models are quite nice and you would probably do well with them but they do go about things a little differently from what you are used to. Most people would do well with either but now that you are used to the way Respironics does things your body might not like to change.

The PR System One 60 Series Auto CPAP model 560...is the latest model that would compare with your M Series Auto with AFlex.
It's been out a couple years. It added central event detection and RERA flags and periodic breathing flags.
Also has the heated hose option.
Resmed's new S10 AirSense (they don't really say S10 they say Airsense I think) just now added RERAs and periodic breathing. The S9's didn't have those 2 items.

I don't know when Respironics is going to make another change from the 60 series....It was released in the Spring of 2012.
ResMed S9 was released in 2010 and just now they have released the AirSense.

If you like to try new things...the AirSense might be nice but if you aren't geared up for experimentation and don't want to take the risk...stick with Respironics and go with the 560.
I have used the M series Auto....and the PR System One 550 and a 60 series in the bipap line....it will feel like what you are used to feeling and the heated hose is a nice option if you ever have rain out in the mask or hose.
The humidification options with the heated hose system allows for much greater customization and control over what you are used to. I don't want to ever have to go through another winter without a heated hose.

Philips Respironics PRS1 Auto
ResMed S9 AutoSet (NOT!!! the Escape Auto)
ResMed A10 AutoSet or AutoSet for Her. (Slightly prefer the for her version.)

Don't bother with anything else unless there's some strong reason to.

Roughly a tossup which one is better.

The new A10 won't work with SleepyHead right now, but that should be fixed some time soon. I'm guessing a month or two.

A10 has the advantages and drawbacks of a new model.

Do you have any particular needs such as travel, camping, etc.? Some models have some advantages and some disadvantages.

I really appreciate everyone's replies - you've saved me a lot of time getting started.

I do travel occasionally and will (at least for now) probably continue to use my backup M-Series for that, unless there's a compelling reason not to. Currently I have my primary M-Series which I use with a F-P humidifier, and a backup identical M-Series with the integrated humidifier which I use for travel. That machine probably has no more than 800 hours on it, though it is 5 years old. I don't know how long to expect the clock battery to last in it.

I didn't know about the site hiccup - tells you how much I've been around lately! That explains the missing equipment list.
