OT: (Sort of) throwing up after waking up without CPAP

Post by islandboy5150 » Sat Aug 30, 2014 6:06 pm

Woke up at 2:30ish with slight areophagia, took off mask and went upstairs to the sofa. Fell asleep again without CPAP, but definitely went into rem. Awoke around 5:30 with a snort, and almost immediately began to feel that feeling that your gonna throw up. You know, watery mouth, swallowing, that panicky feeling.....when you make a beeline for the nearest sink or toilet? I went to the bathroom and made it to the sink, and heaved ten or twelve times (they were dry heaves as I hadn't eaten or drank anything).

No apparent reason, nothing I know of to cause this anyway. Didn't feel nauseated, didn't have stomach cramps, didn't eat anything spoiled or that didn't agree with me, didn't feel sick at all. But, still got the heaves for some odd reason. Any thoughts?

I'm thinking that the aerophagia is a culprit or source, but don't know exactly how.
Anything you had to eat the previous evening that could be suspect?
Any other medical issues?

There is some discussion about the relationship between hypoxia and nausea in the online literature.
Perhaps you had a significant O2 desaturation just before you woke up and that was the cause.
Do a search on "hypoxia and Nausea" to see if anything there is helpful.

During the last couple years before I started cpap, this would happen 2-3 times a week. (Less often before that, but as far back as 10 years) Now, if I fall asleep without my cpap machine, I have about a 50% chance of this happening. I wake up with a gasping choking fit that simply won't stop until I throw up. I keep a trash can with a liner next to my bed. Happened again last night as I fell asleep watching tv.

I suspect that the closed airway creates a vaccuum effect and/or the gasping/choking brings up whatever is there. I used to blame it on acid reflux, but I think the reflux was really being caused by the sleep apnea. When I started cpap, the acid reflux stopped for several months. It did start up again, but I believe it is now a side effect of one of my medications that is newer than cpap. It is still much better than pre-cpap. and I have never had a gasping/choking/vomit attack while wearing cpap. Ever.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Yes this. Every morning for the last few months before starting cpap - stopped dead the first morning after starting cpap.

Wow that is interesting. I haven't had that issue so far. I always have my cpap on when sleeping. I do know the air that comes through the cpap though has to come out somewhere after it goes into you.

Ditto to above zoocrew and blackspinner. I used to have this with GERD; it's mostly gone since I started CPAP.

um, well, normally, it goes right back out of your lungs, out your mouth or nose, and then gets flushed out the vent holes in your mask.
