Interpreting "Events" in Sleepyhead

Post by bv1800 » Fri Aug 29, 2014 9:36 am

Over the past 3 months, I've lost 15% of my starting body weight, which resulted in the need to lower my pressure. I don't have a data enabled machine, so I've been doing this by "trial and error" using "how do I feel" and whether or not I wake up, needing to exhale air from my mouth as the yardstick as to whether or not I need to lower my pressure. I started with a pressure setting of 11 CM and over the course of a couple weeks, lowered it to 6. I've felt great, but my Dr and RT at the DME want to be sure that I didn't lower it too far, so yesterday, I received a data capable APAP to do a home titration study. My AHI for the night was just under 4 and pressure ranged from 5-6, so the 1st night of the test seems to verify the settings that I've been using.

When I take a closer look at the data, my data looks very good up to 4 AM, when I had a small but noticeable increase in events, over the subsequent 45 min. This timing also coincides with when our puppy got restless and I know that I woke up a couple times when her tags would jingle.

Question: can external events that cause you to wake momentarily be interpreted as OA or H events by the machine?

Yes, awake and/or semi awake breathing can often be mistaken by the machine for some sort of apnea event. Our awake breathing is much more irregular than asleep breathing and it can fool the machine. The machine has no way to know if you are awake or not.
