First night problrms

Hello, first time here. Last night was first night with machine. Lasted all of about 30 min. Person who delivered 12machine set rate at 12 which was prescribed, humidifier at 3 and ramp at 30 min. Got everything ready, put mask on and checked to see if fit good. But I noticed it was harder breathing in and out. Within 5 min. my nose was stiffed up causing me to breath through my mouth. Since I am a side sleeper I could not find a comfortable was to place my head with mask on.
Then after a little while my stomach started feeling queasy. I stayed like this for a little while but it was 4AM.Enough is enough. I can't get comfortable, my nose is stopped up and my stomach is queasy. Shut machine off, took mask off and got in my normal sleeping position and promply fell asleep.
I didn't have this problem when I had the sleep study. Of course the bed and pillows were uncomfortable I had my head somewhat hanging part way over the side. And I did wake up quite often, unusual for me. When they woke me to put mask on it didn't bother me because my head was not on the pillow. I went right back to sleep. Had no trouble breathing. They probably increased the pressure while I was sleeping. Being such a sound sleeper I would not have noticed
I also felt a lot of air coming out of mask where connection for tubing is. But machine said good fit. The recommendation of the sleep lab is CPAP at 12, with heated humidification, ENT and or dental evaluation if CPAP not tolerated. Person who delivered machine also set humidity at 3 and ramp at 30 min.
I would rather have the dental device due to the way I sleep because of my bad back.
Any advice as to the possible problem would be appreciated.

You're in Jersey and the humidity's been high... turn off (or at least 'down') your humidifier and heat. You don't need it now most likely, and it's the reason you're all stuffed up. It's not therapy in any case, only meant to help when necessary, as in the winter when central htg makes our homes dry. You can play with it (a few nights at each setting) to see what works best for you when, but for now I suggest trying Cpap without it. And PS - if that's your kitty, she's SO adorable!

Thank you Julie. Don't know if makes a difference but we do have central air. But I will try without humidity and see what happens.
Today has been beautiful though. Low 80's low humidity nice breeze coming off the ocean.

No, that is not my kitty. Wish it was. I don't have any at present time. Had knee replacement last year but put it off until my last cat passed away. Up in years and din't want to board her out while I was in re-hab. Now I need other knee done. My husband has advanced Alzheimer's and with the aides coming and going and him acting up at times, thought it best not to have any now. But I miss having them.

Are you a mouth breather? I have the Quattro FX as a backup mask, for when I'm not able to breathe through my nose. My everynight choice, however, is the Swift FX nasal pillow. It's a lower profile choice, that works well for me, regardless of if I'm on my back, side, or almost on my face at night.
The Quattro has pretty strong venting, as does the Swift, and that's what you feel when you put your hand in front of your face with the mask and machine on. Normal. The machines even count on the venting, which is why it showed no problem with leaks.

Did they use a FFM during your study? I agree the humidity may be too high, does the mask push on the bridge of your nose too?

Maybe try a cut out pillow so you can side sleep?

Sleep with your head at the edge of the pillow with the mask hanging off the edge of the pillow.

The air venting out is normal and necessary to remove the CO2. It's not a leak.

Try to sleep with your tongue on the roof of your mouth (practice all day). That will keep air out of your stomach, which is why you felt queasy.

Practice using the machine during the day when you are doing something quiet like reading, watching tv, or listening to music. It takes some time to get used to, give it a chance. Oral appliances are less effective, expensive and rarely covered by insurance, and not very comfortable either.

All of these things above. I started with Quattro Air, the mask you are using, and as Janknitz said, it's normal. I am a side sleeper too, and I learned to sleep with my head at the edge of the pillow with the mask just at the edge or hanging a bit over it. I have a memory foam pillow and it makes room for the edge of the mask which helps when I move to another part of the pillow while in my sleep. I took me several weeks to get used to the mask and the machine... after all, the brain recognizes them as alien beings, and the brain has to acknowledge that it's OK, just as we do, only it takes the brain a bit longer to do that.
