Understanding my Home Sleep Study Results

Post by Daso » Thu Aug 28, 2014 9:42 am

So I finally got the results of my home sleep study and would love to see what some with more experience think, I never had much more of a conversation with the doctor other than you have sleep apnea and these are your options. After a bit of wrangling and at the suggestion of you all, I now have the Resmed S9 Autoset. 5 days and I haven't really adjusted to having the hose and I wake up a lot because of the mask. I just found out I have a sinus infection and my ENT suggested I do not use the Cpap for a few days until resolved. I am going to take these results to the ENT as well, but any input thoughts from you would be appreciated. I can't post the jpeg so I've typed the results below.

Daso:

There is a link in my signature block below on how to post a .JPG image on a sharing site called PhotoBucket.

That should explain how to get it done. If not, please post a question about what doesn't work for you.

Given that nomenclature, you look (sound?)(no, I guess "look" is right) like you used the ApneaLink device, which does not determine sleep, so some/most/all of those events could have been during wake.

Does appear like you've got quite a bit of Flow Limitation there.

BTW, just what is it you hope to accomplish with all this?

TIA.

Hi Tia,

Being that I barely spoke to the Doctor, I don't even know what the flow limitation is. You are absolutely correct that it was the apnea link home study. My main goal in all of this is to stop these bouts of exhaustion which hit me in the afternoon and night with the minimal investment (not financially) in equipment strapped to me. Does this test give an individual a reasonable report which is accurate in determininfg sleep apnea. I'm going to keep my cpap and have a dental device made next week (my friend is a dentist) to see if it does the trick while also using a pulse oximeter to monitor. Quest to gain back my energy.

OK, we'll go with that.

The more important question to ask is:

Does the device provide quality data?

And "IMHO" I believe it does. The ApneaLink pressure signal is crisp, and the oximetry sensor is Nonin, which is a good quality device.

However, HSTs can be very unreliable in mild OSA and/or poor quality sleep. If you're having respiratory disturbance during wake in the study, those events should not be counted in determining the AHI (but most HSTs do not measure sleep because they do not have EEG, PAT or any other technology to do that).

But back to the point:

The HST report accuracy is only as good as the person who scored it.

That is only going to happen if:

The benefits gained from xPAP therapy;

Exceed the sum total of the problems it creates.

This is very very true. I seem to wake up incessantly while I have to mask on because (although not leaking) through swift fx, I feel constant urge to readjust and keep getting up to move the hose. If I had 5 apneas, I probably woke up 10 time to reposition and adjust . My biggest concern is the lowest point in my O2 at 80% that seems pretty bad, especially if the pulse oximeter is reliable.

OK, but motion artifact can make any pulse oximetry signal inaccurate.

Understood. Although I'm unsure of the quality and reliability, I am ordering the contec cms50d+ so I can do some of my own experimenting. Would have preferred a nonin but too expensive for model with Bluetooth. I also don't want to overthink this and lab rat myself and just feel better
