Jerking while sleeping new symptom

Post by tiredmemo » Wed Aug 27, 2014 11:03 am

This site has been a lot of help so far. I have not been able to find this so maybe you all can help. I started on CPAP in June of this year so around 2 1/2 months. I had my follow up visit with the Dr. and told him about my jerking while asleep. My husband has complained about it. This is something totally new. When I did my sleep study I hardly moved from my right side. He said something about being a pretty still sleeper and it was good that I didn't sleep on my back. Since starting CPAP I have made several changes from masks, to auto pressure. The Dr has put me on some med's starting with a Clozapam or something like that (really don't remember the name) but it has helped with the sleeping. Has taken me from 1mg to 1/2 mg and now I am moving again. I complained about it making me forgetful in the am hours and this is hard to do since the bulk of my work is done between 7am to 12 noon. Anyone else start with the movements after starting CPAP? This is not just my legs. I sometimes hit him also. Any help would be welcomed.

What is the Clonazepam for? It has a variety of side effects but I don't see in the list things like jerking at night. That sounds like restless leg syndrome.

Forgetfulness, however, is in there. Here is a link to one site that discusses side effects.

He gave it to me to help stop the jerking. On the full dose it does and I only get up 1x a night. 1/2 dose I am up 6x or more a night. He said it is used to treat seizures that are mild. He said it is off labeling.

Do some reading about PLMD (Periodic Limb Movement Disorder) and maybe ask your spouse if your movements fit the pattern of PLMD. Or better yet, video record them. With this disorder the movements will be rhythmic and stereotypical. The repetitive movements can continue until an arousal snaps the streak, and once falling back asleep will likely resume. While not definitive, an overnight pulse oximeter study that a doctor can order to be done at home could be assessed for pulse rate variability which is thought to be an indicator of PLMD. Having PLMD show up after starting CPAP is not unheard of. Just to be clear, Using CPAP does not cause PLMD. Using CPAP allows one to sleep better without being frequently awakened by apnea events. It is during that better sleep that any latent movement issues find the freedom to manifest. This may not be your issue, but if it is, please do yourself a favor and read up on some things to do hopefully before starting on meds. The question I have on your current med, which your spouse could probably answer, is if you sleep better because the sedation helps you sleep through the movements or if the med actually reduces your movements?

not riding a bike at night more like swinging the arms at times and just jerking the legs around. Maybe I am trying to dance the night away
