Waking up in the night

Post by HealthyandHopeful » Tue Aug 26, 2014 9:03 pm

Sorry for so many questions tonight. I haven't been on the website in a while and I can't figure how to post a question from the app!

I tend to wake up a couple of times in the night. I usually wake up 2 hours after going to sleep, and then maybe 2 hours after that. Sometimes after that second time I'll sleep all the way until time to get up or sometimes I'll wake up some time before then too and go back to sleep. And usually I don't get up to go to the bathroom at those times, so that's not the reason for waking then. I have wondered if I am probably dreaming and my dream comes to an end and I wake up then, although I don't normally remember dreaming at that time. Does anyone else have similar patterns or have any idea why I do?

I do love that I dream now. I often can remember at least some of my dreams when I wake up. I don't know how long it has been since I remembered dreaming (before CPAP therapy!)

Even though I wake in the night I normally go back to sleep soon after until the next time I wake up. Rarely do I sleep all the night through.

Hi Healthy!

I am fairly new to the forum & also have experienced the same wakings about 2 hours apart...usually around 2am & 4am. I had to use the bathroom during one of these times. I received some helpful advice on here on how to address that so most nights I do not have to get up twice now.

I still tend to fully wake at least once. I think since I have only been on CPAP since late may my body is still adjusting after years and years of wakings. However, if you do have Sleephead software take a look to see what might be going on before your wakings such as snoring, leaks, etc.

Best of luck! I for one can say I feel SO much better!

Do you possibly have other health issues? I used to do that my Pulmonologist sent me for testing and that is how I found out I had COPD which also has a big effect on nighttime breathing. Check it out and best of luck!

Yes I have the same problem. I told my sleep doc that I felt like my dreams were waking me up. After the sleep study she determined that I had REM related sleep apnea.

On cpap now but I still wake up every two hours but have no problem going back to sleep. The info from my data card shows I am improving and I do feel better but still waking.

I take a medication that is sedating as well and causes vivid dreams.

I did wake up more last night and had a a little trouble going back to sleep. Not really enough to complain about. If I can remember the times and check my graphs that may help.

Last week I started having trouble sleeping. I was eating a lot of junk last week. I am back eating healthier again and think that must help with sleep!

I have more going on than OSA, so i can't really relate my pattern of wakeups to someone without the same issues. In general I can say I don't see an occasional wakeup as surprising or problematic as long as the sleep in between those wakeups is good. My only concern would be that the wakeups we remember can be just a small percentage of the wakeups we actually have. Even with acceptable treatment of OSA, most people have several breakthrough events over the course of a night. Like how a sleep study breaks down for us how many total events we had and how many of those events caused arousal, it's easy to believe that even on CPAP, some of those residual events could cause arousal and lead to wakeups. But if your treatment is shown to be effective and there's not frequent or prolonged wakings or daytime symptoms, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
