Lansinoh -- usage questions

Post by HealthyandHopeful » Tue Aug 26, 2014 8:31 pm

I've been using the lansinoh inside my nostrils and it helps a lot with leakage (I use the nasal pillows). I have some questions though:

1-How do you apply it? I have used my finger, but it's not easy to get the gel off when washing my hands. I've used a Q-tip -- seems better. Or once I squirted it right in, trying not to use my finger, but that was almost impossible.

2-How do you clean the nasal pillow and how often? It's not easy to clean! I'm afraid with the amount of effort it would take, it might stretch out my nasal pillows too soon using the cpap wipes. Can they just be soaked in something that will clean them off?

3-Does anyone else sometimes get a buildup of lansinoh in your nostrils at times? Maybe a gross question to ask!

Welcome, Debra!

It sounds from your description that you're using far too much Lansinoh? A tiny dot, just enough to lightly coat your nares, should be all you need, and would be easy enough to remove from your finger with a tissue (or to rub into any other dry patches you might have - waste not, want not! ) Any more than that and it will soften with your body heat and could cause the mask to slide and leak, and excess would cause a buildup on the pillows over time. I use a tiny dab, coat my nares and don the mask, and by morning it's soaked into my skin and virtually no residue on the pillows when I rinse them in warm soapy water and leave to dry. HTH

Thank you for that explanation! I've probably been using too much. Less, though doesn't seem to coat well, but I will try it tonight!! What I have used works well, just seems a bit messy.

Hehe, yes you'll want to avoid the "greased pig" look and just apply lightly at the point of contact between pillow and nostril. Less is more, I promise

I use about maybe a half bb sized blob, and just smear it around with a finger, then wipe it on my leg... I figure if it's good enough for my nose, it'd good enough for my leg

I think I was putting too much on the inside "rim". Using less tonight and applied on the edge.

Have to agree...just a dab between thumb and forefinger. Work the nares then the pillows sliding between thumb and forefinger. Any remaining you can just rub on a knuckle.

Q-tips are likely to leave cotton fibers which can lead to small leaks.

Worked fine using less. Thanks all!

So tonight I used a small amount of the gel and the pillows wouldn't stop leaking! So I went and applied more ~ probably too much. I see it is way better to sleep without uncomfortable leaking even if there is extra clean up to do as a result! So thankful this works!

Try the next larger size pillow.

When fitting pillows always start with too big and work your way down to where they leak.

Thanks for that idea. I did not know how to choose pillows. And at first none seemed great or all that different from each other. This would be a good time to try that again!

My experience has been that the Ayr gel is no good for helping seal, only for keeping nasal membranes moist. If I apply it near the outside of my nose it invariably drips and causes slippage. Stick with the Lansinoh.

That was my experience with the Ayr gel also. Good for moisture but lacked the tackiness that Lansinoh ointment offers.
I also personally think it lacked the healing abilities if the nostrils were sore but I have no proof.

I used the Medium nasal pillow last night and it worked fine. I realize now that I tried all 3 sizes (XS, S & M) in the beginning and didn't see a difference in any, but that was when I first started treatment and still wasn't sleeping anyway. Now that I am used to nasal pillows and can sleep with them it was a good idea to try a different size. I'm glad this was suggested! I slept fine with the Mediums, so I'm assuming that is the size I need! Thanks!

I'm wondering. Since my set only goes up to a Medium, should I request the Man's P10 set the next time I get the whole set must to make sure I don't need the even larger pillow (surely not but if it contains the same Medium pillow would it hurt?) Is the head piece the same as the woman's or larger? I thought I had read it is the same.
