Allergen white filter
Allergen white filter
How do you use the allergy white filter do you put it on the machine behind the black filter or is it used alone? Also how often to replace it?

Re: Allergen white filter
I just use the white. I don't use the Allergen white filter with the other filter. I get mine replaced every two weeks. Also, my Allergen white filter is disposable.
Re: Allergen white filter
With my PR S1 machine I use both the white fine filter and the gray/black foam filter.
The white fine filter goes in first with the fuzzy soft side facing out to gather the particles...then I put the foam filter in.
I would change mine about once a month. It all depends on the dust situation in your house. I live out in the country in a drafty old farmhouse and have pets.
You can usually tell when the white fine filter is getting tired...it turns gray. Some people change it every 2 weeks.
Normally when I change the white filter I also take the time to wash/rinse and dry the foam filter too.
ResMed machines only use 1 filter.
Respironics uses 2 filters but the white filter is considered optional. After seeing how nasty my white filter became I decided it wasn't optional. YMMV though.

Re: Allergen white filter
I also use both filters. If you want to see if the white filter is dirty just hold it next to a new white filter for contrast. Clean or change the foam filter when you change the white filter.
Re: Allergen white filter
Thanks all! My allergies are going through the roof! Ragweed is killing me. Just left the doctor..... Allergic rhinitis and bronchitis. I was thinking even though I leave my windows closed that maybe some of that ragweed is still seeping into the house.
So put white filter in first fuzzy side going in and then the foam filter on top of that.

Re: Allergen white filter
Philips Respironics says to wash the grey foam filter every two weeks and replace at 6 months. They say to replace the white filter every 30 days. More often if they get dirty.
The filters are mostly there to protect the machine, not you. Normal people without CPAP breathe unfiltered air all night long, and you breathe it whenever you're not hooked up to CPAP.
If you let them get clogged, they block the airflow and your machine may overheat, or you may get less airflow than you need.

Re: Allergen white filter
Fuzzy side faces outwards toward the foam filter. It's the fuzzy stuff that catches particles. Think about how the air flow through the machine and what you want the filter to do.Chelle25 wrote:So put white filter in first fuzzy side going in and then the foam filter on top of that.

Re: Allergen white filter
Thanks for the info. Yes I clean my foam filters every week. I wash them in soapy water and then rinse well. I have 2 of them so while one is drying I have the other.

you can also get a round anti-bacterial filter to put in between the machine and your maskChelle25 wrote:Thanks all! My allergies are going through the roof! Ragweed is killing me. I use one, and feel that it helps cut down on the amount of pollen that gets through to my nose at night. archangel will tell you that it's a bad idea and to ignore what our hosts at cpap.com say about how often to change them, but that's his opinion, and he's entitled to it. perhaps he doesn't have allergies like you and I do
I prefer to go by my experiece, and the instructions that I've read on multiple sites where it says to change 'em when they start looking dirty. I usually get mine on ebay, but figured I'd give a shout out to the sponsers here if you're looking to buy and get them quick (they also come in smaller packs, but end up costing more per filter)

Re: Allergen white filter
If you use a humidifier this filter will clog right up. Not only will it restrict air flow to you it also reduces events the machine can detect. Not a good idea Esp. if you have an auto machine.
Search the forum for more posts about this type of filter. It doesn't like moisture, period.

Ah, thanks so much for popping in with that info. I may think twice about even using this thing.

Re: Allergen white filter
I don't understand why there aren't instructions somewhere that clearly say "put the philips logo facing in". I mean the instructions are a little vague, but if they're going to bother putting their logo on one specific side of that filter they could use it for more than just branding.
When I got my PRS1 they told me to take that filter out and basically clean it a bit and re-use every month. Thankfully I read up and discovered that was a mistake when I saw the condition of it after a few weeks. Was not shocked when I realized they also had me inserting it backwards!
