Any SD Card?

Post by MyJanine » Tue Aug 26, 2014 9:58 am

OK, My apologies for this noobie question. My doctor wants me to mail in the SD card for the clinic to evaluate my care. Can I use any good formatted SD card in place of the card that came with the machine? I've just started using Sleepyhead and would like to continue collecting data after I send this supplied SD off. Side note... The HMO clinic bills me $40 just to read the SD card!!!
I have a lot of other questions as I am concerned about my AHI averages coming in after 42 days at 5.91 (with 1/2 dozen nights over 10.00)
This is my machine: Philips Respironics RemStar Auto with A-Flex (560P)
Here is a print screen of my Sleepyhead data for my first ever 42 days on a CPAP device:

Yes, you can use pretty much any generic SD card.

In regards to the elevated AHI. We need to know the event category break down and not just the single AHI number before we start worrying.

Hi, you didn't post what mask (+ type) you're using... would you mind adding that?

Welcome to the board.

As Pugsy says, most any SD card seems to work, but occasionally, you'll get one that doesn't work on your particular machine.

There are actually 3 flavors of SD card. SD, SDHC, and SDXC. SD goes up to 2 GB, SDHC goes up to 32 GB, SDXC goes 32 GB to 2 TB.

A few people report SDHC cards don't work on their S9 or PRS1 machine, but most find they do. I haven't heard reports on SDXC cards, but I suspect they won't work.

The manufacturers say to use their own brand of card, but many of us have used other cards without problems. ResMed says SDHC won't work, but many of us find they work.

The PRS1 and S9 machines may work with a card larger than 2 GB, but they won't take advantage of the extra space.

It's sort of getting hard to find SD cards these days, but SDHC cards are usually easy enough to find.

Here are some sources:
Amazon.com
Radio Shack
Walmart
The WalMart reference lists other sizes but the 2GB ones will all work.

WOW! This is a VERY active forum... so many responses in a few minutes.
OK, I will use only a 2G or so low volume SD card. I've got some 32G and 64G but won't use those. The 42 days of date only used a few hundred K.

I'll need to figure out my Sleepyhead readings to give the answers to"

Ouch..that's a lot unless it was for 12 hours of sleep.

Time to get SleepyHead up and running and you learn how to post images of your detailed reports.

back on orginal topic.... My original Resmed SD card lasted about 14 months before it stopped working. I was getting all kinds of unformatted errors, strange data in sleepyhead showing major mask pressure errors, etc...

I replaced it with a PNY brand SD card and it died within months of using them. After a month, the S9 needed to reformat it after downloading data to Sleepyhead and Rescan.

FYI --I always put the SD card in lock mode during download and unlock it prior to installing it back into my S9.

Then just recently it wouldn't re-format in the S9 or my laptop.

I bought SANDISK brand SD cards and have not had any issues in several months.

my humble advice is to stay away from the bargain basement SD card

Dave

Lock mode during download? By "download" are you saying "while it sits in the CPAP machine"? Sleepyhead would not read it if you're referring to lock mode while it's in my PC slot. Right? Odd, I just put an old cheap Sandisk SD in there last night... will check this morning if it's functional.
It's also just weird that HMO in Seattle WA (Group Health) asks me to USPS mail the stick without first advising me on a new stick, or better yet sending me a replacement.

Correct. Lock/write protect mode while in the PC slot to prevent your Operating system from sneaking a little file on the SD card
BUT
you have a PR S1 machine and it doesn't really care if there's an extra file on it and it won't spit the card out like the ResMed S9 machines do. It's not the end of the world with the PR S1 machines if you forget and don't write protect your card.

Here's the deal about DMEs and those SD cards and your machine. DMEs don't care if you have access to the data or not. They would actually prefer that you didn't (in most instances). They probably are just wanting to verify compliance hours of usage.
Having a SD card in the PR S1 machine doesn't lose much data...you could leave the SD card out for a week and the only data you lose is the flow rate graph line (called wave form in Encore). The PR S1 stores pretty much all the data except wave form for around a month. So even if they had your card (and you didn't have a card in the machine) not all is lost during that time frame. One little data point is lost. And since most DMEs only care about hours of use (which is stored on the machine for a year) they could care less if you had a replacement SD card because for the most part the data that they would want to see is stored on the machine anyway.

Get a spare SD card that you machine will take and either copy the contents of your existing card to that blank card and send the new card to DME or keep it and use it and send the old card to DME.

Just remember with your machine it actually stores a good bit of data on its internal memory and it will put everything it stores on to a new blank SD card. The only thing lost is wave form/flow rate graph line.
This is why it isn't such a big deal if we leave the SD card in the computer over night.

Now it's a different story for S9 users. Their machines store very little data on its internal memory and they lose all the graphs if they don't have the SD card in the S9 all night.

yes... I apologize for my lack of clarity regarding lock mode... I lock it when putting it into my computer... NOT when it is in my S9

sleepyhead *recommends* you lock the sd card before putting it in the computer, because some computer OSs crap little files on the sd card, and resmed machines don't like that, and so want to reformat the card when you put it back in the machine.

it's not an access lock, it's a write prevention lock.
