newbie progress report

Post by pranayama » Mon Aug 25, 2014 5:17 pm

Hello
Had my second sleep study (titration), and discussed results with sleep specialist. Zero AHI with mask. Recommended air flow is 9 m. No of arousals about the same (first study 32/hr; second 39/hr). (This was disappointing to me, but doctor said wearing mask will cause arousals at first.)
My insurance 100% covers CPAP, no co-pay. My insurance co approved doctor request, even though technically I don't qualify for OSA. DME provider is Apria (no choice). Have class scheduled on Thu, and will get machine. Have tried to get more info., but so far only know brand is Remstar.
There was something in Apria message about providing credit card to secure machine for 3 mos. I assume that's until I show I'm compliant in using it.
Besides clarifying that, are there any other questions I should be asking?
Thank you!

DON'T give Aprea your credit card!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have no co-pay...they do not need your credit card. From the experiences of others on this board, you may start to receive charges that you will have to fight.

Make sure they do not give you a brick!! See the topics at the very top if you don't know what I am talking about. (I think, in a nutshell, with the Remstars: the machine with "plus" in the name (this is the part of the name that comes before Cflex plus or Aflex plus) is a brick; you want a machine with "pro" or "auto" in the name).

Hi. I saw in another thread Sludge asked you about your arousals, if they were respiratory related or spontaneous? Do you have a copy of your report? If I missed you answering that I apologize. If you indeed have UARS, seems I've read on here that certain delivery styles of treatment are recommended. Maybe your doctor is on top of all this but I wouldn't assume. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will step in here.

Try to get a copy of your prescription. Apria will try to give you a brick (cheap machine that provides no data). I would recommend a Resmed S9 Autoset with humidifier and climate line hose. Be sure to insist on it. Apria will screw you if you let them!

If they just HAVE to HAVE a credit card...get one of those prepaid credit cards with a small amount on it and use it.
I would bet my last dollar that even with 100% coverage that you get dinged for something.

Thank you kteague, Sheriff Buford, and Pugsy.
I phoned Apria again, and got a helpful person who answered questions no on else had. She read my order, and said I was getting a Respironics Remstar DS460S with humidifier. I googled DS460S, and looks like the number matches Respironics DS460S REMstar Pro C-Flex+.
She also said that my order was missing a key phrase, "credit card required." So I may be able to abstain from giving Apria my cc info.
kteague, you mentioned another thread re: UARS - I think that was someone else. Yes, have copies of both my sleep studies. The dx of UARS is provisional, based on my daytime sleepiness, mouth structure, and arousals per hour during studies. My doctor said for a definite dx, would need to travel to Stanford where they have a special equipment we don't have here (west coast). She wants to treat with CPAP, and continue to assess.
Thanks everyone, I'm sure I'll have more questions.

yes, the 460 part is all that really matters...

'respironics' = the company.

remstar and 'c-flex+' are both marketing fluff terms that mean nothing, in that *all* respironics machines are called 'remstar' these days, and the 'c-flex+' isn't an option, all the 460 machines have it.

it's like a car company putting out an ad for "the new gewhizbang youcar, with wheels and windwhield!" .... like they sell any without wheels and windshield
