CPAP is great for sinusitis and asthma?

Post by MarchWinds » Sat Aug 23, 2014 3:31 am

Since I started using my machine (it's been over 5 weeks), I have noticed that my sinuses are clearer than they have been in more than 5 years. And I think I might have noticed some improvements in asthma.

I could be wrong, and only time will tell, but I think I developed sinusitis and asthma as a result of worsening UARS about 7 years ago, so I'm hoping the CPAP treatment will reverse it. I have a very small mouth, which my doctor said is a contributing factor to my breathing issue.

During the time I developed asthma, my energy levels dropped drastically and I gained 40 pounds in less than 6 months! Finally at very attentive GP diagnosed the asthma and put me on Advair, and my energy levels improved. But the sinus problems never went away (I also lost and regained a lot of the weight, more than once).

All this to say: have you noticed improvements in sinusitis and asthma while using CPAP?

I often wake up breathing through my nose better than when I went to bed. It's the addition of the humidified air.
I have never has asthma so can't really comment about it but it stands to reason that the humidified air helps in that regards also.
We have several forum members who have commented that the humidified air has help reduce asthma symptoms.

I get exactly the same results with low humidity, I must run "wet".

Same for me. I am much better with my cpap machine then before. It could also be partly because using the cpap therapy reduced my acid reflux at night and that I am breathing filtered humid air for 8 hours.

During winter when the air is drier I have had nose bleeds from using Flownase or Nasonex. My CPAP with humidifier has allowed me to breath better at night. Also I need less medicine to reduce congestion which really was only a problem at nighttime. After being on CPAP for a few months I started taking blood thinning medicine. Ironically, with the combination of Flownase and blood thinning medicine I have not had a problem with nose bleeds.

CPAP is definitely great for sinusitis!

I've dropped my Veramyst dose to one spray per nostril per day and have had no nose bleeds in this, my first summer (humid in Austin). Waiting to see what balance I need when we run heat in winter (2 months usually).

I sometimes get a stuffy nose, but not sinusitis or asthma. CPAP usually clears it up right away.

Maybe the pressure shrinks the swollen tissues in my nose, maybe it's something else. If my nose gets stuffy during the day, putting the CPAP on clears the nose up in a few minutes.

Some people react differently and end up getting worse with CPAP.

It is probably the fact that everything during your 8hr is run through a filter and humidified. Maybe an in room air filter would have the same effect.
Just guessing

Hi,

I noticed a dramatic improvement in my sinuses when I wake up in the morning since starting on CPAP. I used to always wake up plugged up, and it would take a few hours to get opened up. However, with CPAP, I wake up clear, and I am clear all day. I think it has to do with breathing filtered air and not having my nose breathing air from near my pillow and bedding, plus the airflow through my nose keeping things from building up. That alone was enough of a quality of life thing to want to use CPAP.

I never thought of it until reading this thread - but this past winter I have not had a single sinus infection, and it's the first winter in a very long time that I haven't had one of those. I just started cpap in Feb. but the early part of the winter I did not have any either. I've been stuffed up with a couple minor colds, but that's about it.

When I set the humidifier appropriately (not to high) than the CPAP really helps with keeping my sinus clear and open.

It can be an art though trying to get the right humidity setting :/

Most people think the higher the better, but some people find too much humidity makes things worse. Another trial and error thing with CPAP.
