Constant ear infections since using cpap but need cpap

Post by Kerrie33 » Wed Aug 20, 2014 4:33 am

Hi, I've just found this site and would like to know if there is anyone else that has only had constant middle ear infections since using Cpap. Is there anything that I can do? I always make sure equipment is clean. Ive just finished my 7th lot of antibiotics and also have drops. Please help!

I have seen other people mention ear problems., As somebody who grew up with ear infections, I can honestly say that I haven't had one in years, long before starting cpap. It seems to be rare, but not impossible.

I would assume you have discussed this with your ENT specialist since you have been on medication several times. Have they had an idea why cpap would cause this? The only thing I can think of is that air is going someplace it shouldn't. If you think you can breathe through your mouth only, you might try the oracle mask. See if skipping your nose will avoid the air affecting your ears.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

You might need to ask your treating physician to actually culture the purulence in the middle ear. If you have been colonized by some kind of resistant or unusual organism then broad spectrum antibiotics may not work and you will need to know the exact sensitivities of what is causing the infection before it can be killed.

Without knowing the exact organism antibiotics are sort of a roulette game, you just have to hope you hit the right one, and that's always a bad way to handle medicine.

You might want to check out your humidity levels. Irritated sinus passages get inflamed. This creates pockets of perfect storms of warmth, humidity and bacteria. Some people's sinuses prefer hot swampy air, others prefer cool dry. If the antibiotics you have been taking have not killed off ALL of the nasties in your system they will breed more AND be stronger and more resistant each time around.

You might also make sure you restore the beneficial bacteria because they help support your immune system.
