Auto CPAP devices

Post by Snoreless in Texas » Tue Aug 19, 2014 2:55 pm

I am new to the sleep apnea world and to this forum. I had sleep Apnea for year but been putting off getting the study performed for many reasons, none were good. But anyway, got it done, they gave me a C-flex + set to 7, after 10 days the provider called for AHI information, first night was 21 and the 10th night was at 12.5, so after discussing the my sleep habits, my wife told me I still snored, I wasn't aware that I was. So I told the provider this this as well, and I was told to Immediately to come back a get a Auto CPAP device RESMED S9 Auto with a modem so they can get the info daily. I've been on the auto unit(Full Face Mask) for 23 day and the AHI avg is 1.5 with 6.5 hour sleep time avg (started out at 4.5 hours) The pressure median avg is 10 and the 95th% is 13.1
But here is my question to the group, my doctor that basically beat me over the head to do all this, is concerned about the Auto unit vs the set unit. The doctor had heard that most pulmonary physicians don't like the auto because of the possibly stress it puts on the lungs. I have not talked to pulmonary dr. and I have no reason to do so. I feel great after getting good sleep now, no sleepiness during the day, I'm very alert all day now. So has anyone had any issues with lung stress using a auto CPAP or heard of any?

It's obvious that they got your pressure wrong the first time. You really needed a pressure of somewhere between 10 - 13.
This could have also been done with a straight pressure machine by bumping up the pressure till they got it right.
I think your doctors need to do a little more research, but that being said, the pressure changes from a range of pressures in Auto mode can disrupt a person's sleep and leave them feeling very unrested. There have been some recent threads which discuss this on the forum. It's always better to HAVE an APAP because it offers more setting options, but the users need to try both APAP and CPAP modes to see which ones treat them best.
Some people with Afib and other heart issues may have problems with an APAP in a range of pressures. I'm not sure about lung issues, but I suppose it's possible.

I see two different sleep doctors, both pulmonologists, and between the two of them, I am on my current machine, an ASV device that does interesting things with variable pressure. Neither had anything to say about any possible problems because to pressure issues. Its likely that your doctor is less well informed than he should be.

If the variable pressure is not disturbing your sleep, then there is likely no issue at all.

Machine technology is advancing at such a rate that we are indeed fortunate if we happen to find
a doctor who is up-to-date on the machines, settings, and therapy advances.
Usually this is left up to the suppliers; --unfortunate because many do not wish to share or use the knowledge for good--
if they in fact actually learned anything past, "Make the sale".
Fortunately, this forum is crawling with equipment geeks--awesome people, who care about what matters.

I really thank everyone for the replies, good information. But all in all I am getting good night sleep. I don't think my doctor is up to speed on the what and how these device actually work.
