Hello,

i have been diagnosed for 4 weeks now, and have a machine that I have been using quite successfully, I have been reading about sleep Apnea and of people that have died from this, its really scaring me, I have a question can using the machine cause. Any problems like lung problems,? My tech has just altered my machine so it starts at 4 and risers in 10 mins to 9.4
I had very server apnea on 78 per hour and stats of 86% . Will I have done permanent damage I am frightened of going to sleep now. thank you for reading

The machine is only putting plain old room air into you... just at a slightly higher pressure than you'd breathe at normally... it couldn't do damage unless you hiked up the pressure so high your mask would blow off (and some people are prescribed such high pressures due to need and they just wear better masks!). It's therapy, you're going to feel better!

People die of OSA when they do NOT treat it. As in when they won't use their PAP machine as prescribed.

The PAP machine itself is unlikely to create any problems with your lungs. You are just breathing room air that has been very slightly pressurized. The amount of additional pressure is about the same as or less than the difference in ambient air pressure between a day that is very clear with high air pressure and a stormy day with low air pressure.

The damage that was done before you started PAP is something that may or may not be permanent, but for many people, the body does start to heal once they're on PAP. In time using PAP and getting restorative sleep does help most people's bodies to heal. As you keep using PAP, the daytime symptoms of OSA should start to get better and that indicates the body is starting to heal.

There is no reason to be frightened of going to sleep as long as you are sleeping with your PAP machine. Seriously. That's the whole purpose of CPAP therapy: If you are sleeping with the PAP machine and your CPAP therapy is working, then you are sleeping as well as a person without any OSA in the first place.

Given your diagnostic AHI = 78 with desats down to 86%, there is good reason, however, to be afraid of going to sleep WITHOUT using your PAP machine.
