Airsense Oximeter -- does it record with pump off?

Post by Phantasos » Wed May 06, 2015 12:29 am

Short story: I am thinking of getting an Oximeter kit for my AirSense 10 AutoSet CPAP Machine. The question I have is: does the oximeter keep recording if the mask is off my face and hence the machine stops the pump? Or the recording stops as soon as the pump stops?

Long story: My problem is that after 5 months of religious daily use I have no problem falling asleep with the mask on but I am still unconsciously pulling the mask off after a few hours. My sleep doctor does not seem to have any idea of what's going on, beyond "keep trying". There does not seem to be any obvious pattern in sleepyhead diagrams just before mask removal but I suspect there is some desaturation that wakes me up and this is when I pull it. So I would like to get an accurate recording of my pulse and O2 around the time I take my mask off and maybe adjust the pump to avoid any desaturation. (I do have a recording oximeter that I can connect with sleepyhead but I didn't manage to get completely accurate matching of the data from the machine and from my oximeter -- I hope a built-in would do better, but not if it stops recording ).

Thanks for any advice! -- P

I suspect that it does not keep recording after the main machine is turned off.
I have a Respironics version of the attached oximeter and, although it continues to display on the LCD screen, it does not continue to record to the SD card. The Respironics oximeter is made by Masimo and I believe that the ResMed one is made by Nonin, at least the one made for the S9 is made by Nonin.

Here is a link to the User Guide for this module:
ResMed Oximeter Module

However, up until the point of the mask off and the machine stopping, you will have a very accurate line-up of the data of interest to you. If you don't have an auto-off function enabled, recording will continue after you take the mask off. Perhaps you have SmartStart enabled. Turn that off and the machine will continue recording until you wake up and manually turn it off.

I believe there is one other poster on this forum that has the oximeter attachment for ResMed and they will notice and be able to verify my speculation or post a correction.

a hugely better alternative is to buy a cms50i from aliexpress.com for under 100$, and sync the data with sleepyhead.

benefits of the 'official' oximeter:
the data is recorded on the sd card and synced with your cpap data.
would show it's data in resscan, (if you're masochistic )

benefits of the cms50i:
no cord to get tangled up in.
1/10th the cost
offers perfusion index chart.
records whether the cpap is running or not.
time and date stamped multi session capable.

things they both do
collect pulse and Spo2 data.
allow data to show up in sleepyhead sync'd with your cpap data.

The Nonin will provide gobs of additional revenue for the DME.
