CPAP Use - you have got to laugh sometimes!

Post by Tassie Devil » Tue May 05, 2015 6:08 pm

Still getting used to the ResMed AutoSet and have had some teething problems after using the Escape for over 6 months.

The options to change settings can be a trap for young, and in this case, old. Suspecting I was opening my mouth during the night I reverted to the full face mask. That was mistake no 1. No 2 was setting the pressure too high. Result - farts, whistles, burbles during the night which drove my poor wife to another room. Not only was the pressure set too high but there were too many leaks which no amount of adjusting of the straps seemed able to fix.

So, back to the nose mask which fits this old dial a lot better and lowering the pressure ensured no leaks. But all problems were not over. at 5 am this morning the valve on the face mask started burbling, a sign of water in the system. Sure enough, on removing the hose water dripped out. I had the heater previously set at 5 without problems but sleepily leaned over last night to increase it as the air seemed unusually cool. This morning I see it had been increased to 5.5 and the water level was much lower than usual so that increase was not a good idea as it must have significantly increased the temperature so now has been set back to 5. I'm guessing the increased temperature evaporated more water which then condensed and accumulated in the hose to upset the valve in the mask. But to make sure there is no repetition I've connected the heated hose for tonight, set at 16. No idea if that is the correct setting for it but guess it is enough to avoid any condensation.

Now I'm used to the nightly draft of air over the face the challenge has been a seal of the mask and setting the pressure to be useful as well as comfortable. The bigger face mask does not appear to suit me, maybe due to an oddly shaped dial, but the nasal mask is fine. The only oddity with it appears to be a build up of pressure in the mouth causes the odd air expulsion through the mouth but I'm definitely not breathing through the mouth as suspected.

One has to regard all this as a fun enterprise, otherwise it could drive you nuts. In my case I'm half way there already so must take precautions not to go over the edge!

Do not deride the idiots of this world as they make the rest of us look so much better :-) BUT, avoid being an idiot yourself and PERSIST WITH CPAP.

Maybe it has something to do with your living downside up - almost winter there! Or something.

Now I had not thought of that. So what do you suggest? Maybe suspend the bed from the ceiling or ?????

But then ResMed is supposedly made in Australia so it should be those in the Northern hemisphere who have the problems!
