Re: Behavior in this Forum
Folks, we can do a lot better. We have slipped badly. Some of the posts in yesterday’s and other recent threads are nothing to be proud of. They cause serious harm to the tone and quality of our forum. Until we clean up our individual acts, we are no longer number one. And there is little doubt that newcomers are likely being repulsed.
What am I referring to? Hurtful, back-biting personal attacks. Bruising tit-for-tat dialogue. Personal criticism meant to demean others. Characterizations intended to wound by name-calling; e.g., he or she is dumb, confused, senile, lazy, immoral. Posts intended to mess up an ongoing thread.
I believe this forum is for responding to questions and pleas for help. Not for personal communications and not for forming cliques and waging battles. Provision for personal issues has been made by inclusion of the pm/personal mail feature.
Any opinions about this pro or con are welcome.

+1 to what Papit has said.
While we have always seemed to have a few pissing contests here and there on the forum (and I have done my share of participating but it always made me feel bad when I did) it seems like now mainly what I see is bickering and name calling and just crap in general.
It's pretty sad when the fighting out numbers the helping or gets more press.
Maybe we should have a sub forum classification for pissing contests where we can tell the ones wanting to fight to take it outside.
At least it used to be fighting about something related to cpap therapy...it's gone way beyond that now.
I figure if it bothers me and I have a pretty thick skin...what do newcomers to this forum think about us?
I think I know why a good many forum veterans don't come here much anymore...it isn't fun like it used to be.
I know there have been quite a few times lately that I thought about taking another vacation from the forum because it seems like the original goal has long since been lost.
Between newbies who have been rude to me personally and the bickering going on among people who don't seem to care what they say to hurt someone....I find that this place hurts me more than it makes me feel good anymore.

Pugsy... of all people I feel I should apologize to you! I don't know what I would have done four years ago without your help. I remember the time we spoke on the phone... with you helping me with SH. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Papit's post has been duly noted and yours as well. I do hope you'll continue helping people the way you always have.

Re: Behavior in this Forum
This spate of bickering, name calling and combative behavior is endemic in society these days. Last year somebody pulled a knife on me because I called them a jerk for almost running me over with their SUV. Luckily I escaped harm because I quickly pedaled away on my bike. Today I just saw two guys in a parking lot duke it out over a stupid parking space and there were other open spaces nearby (well, this is California!) People not being civil to each other is the new 'cool' as far as I can tell.
Predictably the media pumps up the hysteria: Last week they showed two chunky women brawling in a Walmart; they show videos of kids fighting other kids and being egged on by their parents... even parents at kids sports matches fighting with the spectators and sometimes the officials. I'm not elevating the stuff I just mentioned to our problems here at CPAP talk, however IMO every little incivility adds up to a whole lot of trouble down the road, and I mean for all of us on the planet, not just the boorish. At a certain point you can't just say 'that's the way it's always been'. This is something new and disturbing that's happening right now and it seems to be getting worse day by day. BTW, do you folks who enjoy the ego flailing on CPAPtalk like to watch videos of people fighting in the stores and in the streets? Maybe, like me, you have to get chased by a knife wielding nut job to get the updated picture.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Wow. You hear about these things, but...unbelievable. So glad you escaped!Sir NoddinOff wrote:This spate of bickering, name calling and combative behavior is endemic in society these days. Life does seem to be like that nowadays. Sure there were always jerks, but there is something about the meanspiritedness of the current lot that is just...over the top. I"ve become quite mobility impaired lately but still try to walk to get exercise in a local park. A couple of teenage POS decided it would be fun to throw a firecracker at me, I guess because I can't get away, and they could laugh at my attempts to do so. Guess I should carry that lightsaber
It would be nice if I could at least feel safe on my own computer. Especially in a place like this. Even if most of my problems now aren't SDB related, I'd still like to help others where I can, and it would be nice if this were the kind of place I could do that.

Blackspinner, +100
There are some very nice people here. In fact most here are nice.
The problem is that some people rub each other the wrong way, and compromise does not easily happen online.
But it should! We also let ourselves be set against one another by trolls who may have exactly that in mind.
Consider the fact that this forum may be a target by those who consider it a threat. I do not kid!

And I wouldn't be surprised if some of the personalities aren't the troll arguing with their own alter ego. Pretty sure it wouldn't be the first time someone set up multiple identities to support their "side" in a thread.chunkyfrog wrote: We also let ourselves be set against one another by trolls who may have exactly that in mind.
As to the current state of affairs, yes there have always been pissing contests on here. The difference is the episodes were sporadic. Now they are with such regularity as to become the new norm. And predictable. That's what makes me suspect, when no matter how innocuous one individual's post may be it is a sure thing their foes will come out swinging.
I'm so over all the bickering. In real life I don't hang out with contentious people, so I see no reason I should subject myself to other people's drama here. You all carry on since it seems to meet the needs of some. I'll continue to just check in to see if I can be of any help. My involvement has been cut back, but it would be hard to just go away. Too many years and relationships built here.
