Taking apart ClimateLineAir to clean

Post by Airchild » Tue May 05, 2015 9:50 am

Hello

I am trying to figure out how to take apart the tube to clean it for a parent using the Resmed Air something 10. It is an APAP machine with a humidifier.

I can easily disconnect the tube from the Apap machine itself at one end, and the mask at the other end.

The reason I am having problems is that both ends seem to have electrical socket type connections, one to the machine and one to the mask, in the form of solid grey plastic cuffs. I can't seem to pull the tube away from either of the plastic grey cuffs at either end. But surely if I were to rinse the whole thing as is I would be allowing water into the circuitry in the grey cuffs.

From the booklet:

Step 1 says 'Hold the cuff of the air tubing, apply gentle pressure oto the release buttons and pull it away from the device'.

Easy enough. But then:

Step 2 says 'Hold both the the cuff of the air tubing and the swivel of the mask, then gently pull apart.

Note: Only hold and pull the cuff of the air tubing. Do not hold or pull the tubing itself as it may cause damage.'

I am very confused, please kindly advise what I ought to do.

That is as far as it comes apart, go ahead and wash it if you wish, it won't hurt it. I don't submerge the ends and soak them for hours but otherwise you should be ok. I have washed one many times with no issues.

Agreed; the heated hose cannot be disassembled without destroying it.
Wash and rinse quickly, dry (without heat),
and wait until it is DRY before reattaching.

Ok brilliant, thank you very much for your replies.

At the moment I clean the mask and humidifier daily with a mild detergent, and will clean this tube in the manner advised once a week.

I saw reference just now on the net but not in my booklet to hanging up the tube daily, is this correct? We live in England in a dry climate so would it be okay to leave it plugged into the machine daily and wash as above once a week.

Also could you advise how often to do a thorough dissassembly and cleaning of the Airsense 10 Autoset (sorry for being unsure about this info in my first post) Apap, and how often do I need to change the filter. We only received it last week and it is our first such machine.

Thanks so much for your help.

everything except the electrical contacts on the machine end is sealed... if you tear the hose apart, it will, as the other nice folks have said, break it.

as far as I'm concerned, washing the hose is optional, and .... well, I never ever wash mine, not after the first couple weeks of use years ago. as long as it is clean looking inside, I'm good. that's not a recommendation as to what you should do, just mentioning what *I* do.

look at it this way, not taking the hose itself apart means you don't have to put it back together

There's no need to ever disassemble the machine itself. If it gets dusty just wipe it off on the outside with a damp cloth.
Filter changing depends on the filter you are using and just how dusty things are in your house.
I think the filter that comes with the machine is designed for multiple months of use and if it is like mine (the one that came with my S9 machine) it can actually be washed.
Now there are disposable filters that you can buy and I actually prefer them because they aren't so porous as the one that comes with the machine and since I have dogs, cats and live out in the country in an old dusty farmhouse I change the disposable filter about once a month depending on how it looks. It's usually worse in the winter due to old furnace blowing out stuff.

I think the recommendation for the filter that comes with the machine is 6 months. I have never been able to find a source for that particular filter though...only thing I have been able to find are the disposable filters.

everything you say is correct, except the filter... there are only two 'official' resmed filters, the standard, and the hypoallergenic, both are flat, fiber filters, the standard being thicker but more open than the hypo.

neither are marketed as "reusable" or washable, though I have done so in the past.

the official change time, from the manual is: "Check the air filter and replace it at least every six months. Replace it more often if there are any holes or blockages by dirt or dust."

mine last a good six months, other people have to change them out every couple weeks, it all depends on the dust conditions.

I get my filters from ebay, or amazon, they're so much cheaper. I don't know where they can be had, aftermarket, in england though.

Clean the mask once a week (though I wipe the surfaces of the mask before using nightly)
Clean the tank once a month (only put Distilled water in it). There are no deposits in it when cleaned.
Clean the hose... never. It will get old and replaced more often.
Change the filter when it starts to look dirty. Depends on time of year, if the windows are open etc.. When windows are closed most of the time, 4-5 months, a month ago, once every 3 weeks.

Note that when I got my S9, I was billed for a "reusable filter", which I didn't receive of course since Resmed doesn't make one. I didn't know that at the time since I just cam from a Respironics which did. After a week of checking, I got a refund.

Nope...there is a 3rd and I have one and it is totally different from the disposable filters that are either regular or hypoallerginic.

It came with my S9 VPAP Auto (brand new 0.0 hour machine). It is washable (I have done it often) and I have laid it out and compared it to the disposable filters...and it is definitely different both in density and how it feels.
It's that original filter I have never been able to find a source for and I have tried.

well, due to the great respect I have for pretty much everything you do, I'll believe you have a third filter... but until you can show me where to get one, I'll maintain that (at least effectively), there's only two... only two mentioned on their web site, and only two sold, and only two mentioned in any manual...

there can be only two! or.... something like that

The filter that came with my Airsense 10 is noticeably different than the replacement filters.
That filter was white, like the others, but the edges were heat-compressed to
create a 2-3 mm. flange all the way around.
I suspect that this filter may only be part of the original bundle, due to sourcing near/in the factory.
--but then again, I've been accused of being all wet!
