Any ideas on how to recover my backup drive?
Yesterday I plugged in my USB drive to search for a file, and the error message said Windows cannot read the drive. Properties shows Size 0, used space 0. I'd rather not reformat; and don't know if it would, given "dear Win 8.1" doesn't like my drive now. Thanks in advance for your input. earl

Normally you prepare for recovery before a drive fails. My guess is this has little to do with Win8 itself. Drives do die. I had one die on Sunday out of the blue (was used as a backup storage drive) but is only 1 part of a 3 part backup solution so no data lost. I'm guessing at best, you will have to reformat it.

1. Did you shut down the drive improperly? Or your computer.
2. Turn off your computer, unplug it for 10 minutes, plug it back in without the USB drive, restart the computer, after everything loads up plug the USB drive into a different USB port.
3. Take drive to another computer, see if it works. Plug a know working USB drive into your computer.
I have over 25 TB of USB data, stored, it's important to backup everything twice, If you have data you can't afford to loose, a third backup is needed, stored off site.
What exactly is the USB drive that's failed, brand, model, size. If it's a major player, their Web site may have a tool to diagnose the problem. Jim

Dont reformat the drive. Worst, take it to computer store, let them sort it out. In between. Look at the site for the manufacturer of the hard drive.
