SleepyHead sometimes will not start

Post by ragnar33 » Fri May 01, 2015 11:11 am

I am getting a little frustrated with SH. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on a 64 bit Dell Laptop. I have tried both 32 and 64 bit versions and I am running version 0.9.8-1. and have least problems with the 32 bit version of SleepyHead-BrokenGL.exe. The SleepyHead-OpennGL.exe also runs sometimes but when I go to the Daily tab it always crashes.
But some times either version will not start. I right-click the exe and select Run. I get the dialog about unknown publisher and click Run. The spinning circle spins for a while then disappears and nothing happens. When I open Task Manager I see no evidence of SleepyHead running. I am a programmer and have never experienced anything like this. The 64 bit version runs sometimes but often I get a message: Could not find the Qt platform plugin "windows". Initially the 64 bit version would not run because missing QtWebKitWidgets.dll. I fixed that by installing the Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013. I guess missing files are common when the app doesn't have a setup file.
Any suggestions about the plugin?

You are doing something wrong.

You should not need to right click the exe, just double click it.

If you are getting the error: QtWebKitWidgets.dll is missing, you are not in the folder where the programs are located.

You should be extracting the files to a folder, and running them from that folder. There is no "install" process, just extraction once.

I am using SleepyHead on this Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit laptop without any of the issues you are having.
I don't go into the main folder to find the exe file each time I want to launch SH. I just put a short cut to that file on my taskbar (right click mouse and chose pin task bar).

Just make sure you are in the unzipped SH folder and not the zipped folder when you are looking for that exe file.
It can be found in the zipped folder but it won't work from the zipped folder and that's one reason for the missing widgets thing.

Why it crashes when going to the Daily tab....I have no idea but I have discovered that if I am impatient and try to click on 2 things for SH to do too soon...SH gets confused and will crash. As long as I don't tell it to do 2 things at one time SH has been very stable for me.

I also use the 64-bit version on windows 7 64-bit without any problems whatsoever. The dll file issue is because microsoft removed that library from the default install of windows 7 64-bit. It it noted as a potential issue right on the sleepyhead homepage: http://www.sleepfiles.com/SH2/ I don't need to use the brokenGL version as the regular version works fine. It has never crashed or failed to work properly. It does not need to be installed because it is self-contained, except for that one library file. I just right-clicked on the .exe file and picked "send to desktop (create link)".

Thanks to all, I followed the installation instructions and I know that a so called Zip folder isn't a folder, it is just a convenient preview of the contents of a zip file. I guess I am stuck with my problems.

I have SH installed on Win 7 64 bit, when I extracted the file it placed a shortcut on the desktop...never had any issues of it crashing...

Now on my Apple laptop SH crashes when I try to install my oximeter data, but that is another story...

I know you are a coder, but I feel the problem is at the beginning of the process....IMO

good luck..
