OT: NFL Draft - I wonder how many of those horses have OSA?

Post by SleepDisturbed » Thu Apr 30, 2015 6:29 pm

Going by neck size I would say many would candidates.

And, will Winston be a star or flame out in off-the-field antics?

Well, Percy Harvin, a wide receiver with a normal neck size, was diagnosed with sleep apnea. So that might not necessary be the best criteria although as an FYI, it seems when there are articles about ex football players being diagnosed with sleep apnea, they had played either offensive or defensive line positions which meant they had large neck sizes.

Regarding Winston, if this article is any indication, I predict he will flame out in off the field antics because he still clearly seems to be clueless. Sheesh, you get cited for shoplifting crab legs and you think it is ok to have a picture of yourself with the food as your draft celebration party as the new leader of the football team?

"It's not the size of the neck on the outside, it's the size of the airway inside the neck." - Dr. Mack Jones

ROCHESTER, Minn., April 20 (UPI) -- Sleep disordered breathing -- sleep apnea -- is highly prevalent among retired National Football League players, particularly linemen, U.S. researchers said.

The study involving 167 players showed that 60 percent of linemen, average age of 54, had sleep disordered breathing, as defined by having at least 10 sleep-related breathing disorder episodes, such as pauses in breathing, per hour. Linemen had an average of 18.1 episodes per hour.

I wonder if the team doctors check these guys?

Or is it something that only shows up after their playing career? I always think of the death of Reggie White. Could he have been saved by early intervention.

(Winston appears to be another one of those players that has a poor understanding of PR).

Look a little further. Reggie was diagnosed while he was still playing and was prescribed CPAP. His wife says the CPAP machine was sitting on the nightstand unused the night he died of a heart attack.

The promise of untold riches entices athletes to indenture themselves to schools
and then corporations that have little or no interest in helping them be healthy or good citizens.
It is a form of slavery---except for the very lucky, very few.

Football is a business. Like any business it will use up and toss aside people, so we have to look out for ourselves. I fear that many athletes do not understand this (hell, it took me thirty years in the corporate world to figure it out -- only after that did I know how to make it work for me!)

Maybe the current legal action RE: pay for college players and money for pros with head trauma will lead the way.

After that maybe team doctors will be forced to look out for the welfare of the players ( silly idea, I know).

head trauma
Surprise! In twenty years you will learn that head trauma among football players is no worse than in the general population of active people.

Most people figure it out very quickly and become successful. Maybe your slow learning was caused by head injury playing badminton in HS?

Who pissed in your cornflakes this morning?

You are always free to disagree with my ideas any time you like. However, I see no reason to be calculatingly rude. I don't remember ever being rude to you. If I was, I apologize.

You don't think that statement is "calculatingly rude"?

Maybe it is just 30 years of bitterness in your corn flakes?

Actually I don't, just realistic according to my life experience. The last ten years of my career were extremely lucrative after I learned my lesson.

So, no bitterness on my part.

You, however, seem to have an abundance of anger, lashing out at complete strangers like this. Must be miserable to be that angry all the time.
