The importance of power backup!

Post by SleepDisturbed » Mon Apr 27, 2015 10:59 am

I have been on CPAP about 2 years now, and during that time I have somehow not experienced a lengthy power failure at my house, despite being in the southern part of Tornado Alley. That lucky streak ended last week, when a severe Thunderstorm blew through here, knocked down trees and limbs and took out our power. We were without power from 9:45 pm until almost noon the next day.

I did not have any sort of battery or generator backup for my CPAP. Stupid me!!!! That was a horrible experience, trying to breathe without CPAP, and I DON'T want to ever do that again, so, as soon as a sleepless night gasping, snorting, and snoring was over, I started reading threads here on what to do about it. I finally decided that a battery system, described by CapnLoki was just what I needed.

I ordered all the pieces and had them by this last Saturday. I put it all together and waited for the battery to charge. My plan was to test it yesterday night.

Well I got to test it alright! Another power outage (with a lot of scary tornadoes suffered by our neighbors to the west, only about 40 miles away -- we only had the severe T Storms, thank goodness). Anyway, I hooked up the battery, plugged in the Resmed converter, turned off the humidifier, and had a good night sleep (except for being woken up a few times by the thunder and lightning!).

Anyway, thanks to CapnLoki for sharing his setup. And a suggestion that all CPAPers should have SOME sort of power plan, either batteries or generators.

CapnLoki's setup can be found here https://sleep.tnet.com/resources/batter ... collection courtesy of Krelvin.

Good move ! As mentioned earlier on another thread, battery backup is quite adequate and can additionally and simultaneously provide juice for a couple low-power items like desk lamps as well as recharging your cell phones. Batteries also sidesteps the noise, gasoline fumes and associated hazards related to generators which, imo, are overkill for cpap purposes.
