Periodic Breathing?

Post by LibbyLou » Sun Apr 26, 2015 6:55 am

I think I had a couple small reports of PB other nights, but wondering about this from last night. Now I'm scaring myself by what I'm reading about PB and heart issues. I'm unsure exactly what I'm seeing on the waveform graph. Anyone?

You should always waste time when you don't have any. Time is not the boss of you. Rule 408.

There is one specific type of periodic breathing called Cheney-Stokes Respiration that is strongly correlated with some forms of heart disease. Cheney-Stokes has a particular pattern that looks like this in SleepyHead:

Your wave form doesn't really look like that. Here's your wave form:

The loose definition of "Periodic Breathing" that PR uses to flag areas as PB just includes a certain periodicity to the pattern that lasts for a certain amount of time AND the pattern involves some kind of large and small breaths. That includes a variety of patterns that simply don't look like and are highly unlikely to be real CSR.

And finally, if the amount of PB is very small and you don't see it every night, it's not really something you need to worry about.

Ditto to what Robysue has said so I don't have to type it again.

Encore software (Respironics official software) doesn't classify these episodes as CSR...it's called Periodic Breathing which is nothing more than a waxing and waning of the air flow that lasts at least 2 minutes.
CSR is a type of Periodic Breathing but it is not the only type.
Your breathing doesn't come close to looking CSRish and even if it did in this small sample...wouldn't be something we would worry about.

When Jedimark came up with SleepyHead he elected to use the CSR term as the install default term instead of PB term (you can change this in the SH settings if you wish). I wish he hadn't done the CSR term because it has caused undue stress among people like yourself who don't understand what it takes for PB to be CSR breathing.
