Lubricating nose pillows

Post by Tripacer » Tue Feb 17, 2015 3:22 pm

I can't seem to find the thread here where someone suggested to use some sort of light oil to lubricate your nostrils when using nasal pillow mask.

Last night i used just a tiny amount of Vaseline on the skin between my nostrils. This worked, to solve a discomfort I was having, where this part of my nose would feel "raw" after 7 hours on the machine. So my question is, does using Vaseline shorten the life of my nasal pillows? I hope not, because it seemed to work for me.

I believe the product that everybody around here uses is called: "Lansinoh". Vaseline is a petroleum product and has the possibility to interact with the silicone rubber.

I have one nostril where the center cartilage wants to push through the skin. After trying a bunch of different products, I found that Blue Emu (of all things) works the best. It moisturizes and has an analgesic in it. I don't use it with the mask. I put it on in the morning or during the day.

Yes to Lansinoh (pure lanolin), no to Vaseline. Aside from the petroleum base interacting with the silicone, it's not something you want to chance breathing in over the long term (Google "lipoid pneumonia" for further insight). I have also had good luck with pure beeswax based ointments and an emu oil/aloe cream sold by our host (tho the latter doesn't agree when my nares are already chapped, as they are this week from a nasty respiratory bout). Ayr saline gel is also popular, as it can be used tomoisturize the inside of the nostrils as well. But whatever you choose, remember that less is more; you're wanting to protect from chafing and enhance the seal, not grease a pig

Found it at Target stores. It is sold in the "Baby" section, as it is sold mainly to breast feeding mothers to soothe sore or chapped nipples. Might try it myself in that region, no wait a minute, that's not why I bought it

Try a little on elbows or knees. You will want to put it EVERYWHERE.

From the second day I used my nasal pillows, my nares have been severely chapped. I would wear my mask for two or three days, and it would take three to four weeks to heal. I then tried a nasal mask, with even worse results. Lansinoh does not help already damaged skin heal. I have tried neosporin, lotion, etc. After the area had completely healed, I tried Lansinoh. It definitely helps prevent damage, but after two days, my nose was still red and itchy (a better result than without Lansinoh). Last night was the third night, and while my nose area is a bit red and itchy, it is way better than before. Another benefit of Lansinoh, is that I have not had one mask leak. Before, my pillows would move and air would leak. This would wake me up. Lansinoh is like a gasket that has so far, prevented leaks. Putting the Lansinoh on every night, and cleaning it off in the morning is a bit of a pain, but well worth being able to continue to wear my mask. I will continue to search for other remedies, but the Lansinoh seems promising.

This forum gave me the idea to try Lansinoh, and I hope my post will help someone else.

I have tried Lansinoh, and it works, but my favorite is clear Vitamin E oil in a little glass jar from the drugstore.
It's real thick and sticky and makes a great seal on nasal pillows. And, it's good for your skin and encourages healing. (Google it.)
After 6 months of Vitamin E oil, the P10 nasal pillows still look brand new, so the oil isn't hurting the pillows.

Hello
I had this problem and it figured out that the pillows were to big, went to extra small. Tonight will be first night using extra small so we will see. I'll keep you posted. Only thing "extra small" on me. LOL
