Bubbling nasal pillow and leaking

Post by Luthie2006 » Fri Apr 24, 2015 9:11 am

Does anyone know what this is? I have a brand new Airfit P10 nasal pillow that I used last night (with Lanisoh) under my nose, and the pillow around 4 hours lately started to leak and make a bubbling sound. I tried to reajust it for 20 minutes, the pillows, the head straps and it would not stop bubbling noise and leaking. I did pinch the inside pillow too to see if it inverted and looked at it this morning and it was not inverted inside. This happened with my other ones too. Could the leak be in the short hose? Please help if you know. I definitely feel the leak in the nasal pillow part but not sure if the air through the hose is causing that? Does Lanisoh under the nose become "warm" and starts the pillow to become a little looser after 4 hours wear? Or should I order a new assembly? Thank you kindly.

My first thought is that there's a tiny bit of condensation or moisture in the inner cones.

Yes...the Lansinoh will warm to body temperature and sort of liquify a bit...if too much is used it could cause the nasal pillows to slide around.
I did that once....woke up to find one of my nasal pillows in my ear.

Yes, thank you Pugsy. I believe, too it is condensation. It felt like it. I had this issue before and was fortunate enough to bring back the humidifer as it was under warrantee. The temp is set at 76. It worked well for about a month now, and now getting condensation in the nasal pillow. Would this be a bad hose, short hose, long hose, bad machine? Thank you for any advice, so I don't waste $100 buying new nasal gear headgear. Appreciate any advice.

I would think that nothing is bad in terms of equipment. I think what probably changed was maybe a slight difference in ambient room air temp and/or maybe for some reason your exhaled breath is expelling a little more moisture and the combination of ambient air temp and moisture in the nasal pillows is allowing just a little bit of condensation.
All I would do if it were me would be increase the air temp in the hose to see if I could keep the air a little warmer in the nasal pillows so that condensation didn't occur.

Another alternative would be a barrel cozy on the nasal pillow itself. Unfortunately I don't know if Karen at Padacheek has one for the P10 or not. She isn't showing one...the Swift FX barrel cozy will fit but takes some fiddling around to keep it from blocking the vent holes. I know because I have tried it. I don't know if one of the others would require less fiddling.
Couple of nice things about the barrel cozy...feels really nice against the skin and the material might possibly absorb some of that little bit of moisture causing the pillows to slide around a bit and thus maybe lessen the chance of sliding around.

If it were me I would just increase the hose air temp to around 80 degrees and see if that helped...then maybe 84 degrees...and if still no joy then maybe look at the barrel cozy.

It's really just a matter of physics...if the only place you are experiencing a little moisture is in the nasal pillows then I don't think anything is wrong with the humidifier or heated hose or the pillows. It's just a matter of keeping the air in the nasal pillows a little warmer so it doesn't released the moisture.
You could also increase the bedroom air temp but for me that would create more problems than it would fix.
And you have room in your hose air temps to increase just the hose air temp...that's what I would do first.

Thank you Pugsy: I will try increasing the air temp to 80 degrees on the machine. I have a short hose cover I bought from Karen (wonderful woman) at Pad-A-Cheek. The short hose cover (barrel cozy) did not fit (too big) and unfortunately had to send it back. I have a very nice long hose cover with zipper and when I felt it last night, it was very cold. What's really funny (?) is that it seems that only one nasal pillow is bubbling (the left one) so now I know there is no hole in the hoses and you are right, it is condensation. It seems once this happens, it's all over for the evening. The condensation never goes away when it is on me, no matter how much I adjust the nasal pillow on me. I will try raising the air temp tonight. Thank you again!

The short hose cozy is NOT the same thing as the barrel cozy.
The barrel cozy is like a little coat for the nasal pillows only...has nothing to do with the short hose at all.

If you want to insulate the short hose...get an old sock and cut a hole in the toe and slide it over the short hose and secure each end with a bread tie or rubber band or scotch tape.

I have used a Q-Tip to remove moisture from nasal pillows.
No disassembly--just poke 'er in and wipe it around.

Chunky Frog: I am glad that you are back to your old laughing joking self. Funny joke! And Palerider too! Thank you Chunky Frog about the Q-tip, however, I don't know if I want to get up in the middle night and find a Q-Tip and dab the nasal pillow that may have condensation again in 5 minutes, but worth a try.
I will turn the temperature up to 81 degrees and try an old sock around the short hose with a rubber band and see if that works. Yikes, I thought I was done with the bubbly nasal pillows last month. It did well for awhile. Thank you all. I will try again.
