Dumb SD card questions

Post by bwexler » Mon Apr 20, 2015 9:59 am

I am visiting my BIL and I forgot to bring a spare SD card to get the info from his PR 560. Can I take the card from my 960 and get his info and NOT erase my data?

Yes. It I think it can be done and won't harm your data.
In the P-Series main folder there is a Pserialnumber folder that contains your machine data stuff.
If you insert your SD card into his PR S1 his machine will write his data to the SD card but will put it in a folder that is separate from your and use his machine's serial number. But splitting up the download becomes a problem so I wouldn't go that way. SleepyHead wants to look in the P series folder and will just try to pull both Pserialnumber folders at one time and the data would be combine. You need to copy your Pserial number folder and put it on your desktop...then remove it from the SD card...and import to software...then remove his Pserial number folder and put yours back on the SD card.

I find it easier to just work with the one P-Series main folder myself though.
What I would do is what I have done when I have had to use a SD card for someone elses data and so I don't risk problems with mine is...
I make a copy of the entire P series folder and put it in a folder on my desktop so I can find it easily.
Then I erase the SD card manually and remove my data.
Then I would insert the SD card in your brothers machine and let it write the data to it.
Then I would download it to the software.
Once I had it downloaded I would then erase the SD card again and go back to that copy of the P-Series folder that is on my desktop and copy it and put it back on my SD card again.
Lots of steps but it works when only one SD card is available.

I can't seem do it with ResMed machines...I have tried and even though I make an exact copy the S9 still will tell me it doesn't like the SD card.

Alternately...if you have a WalMart or similar store nearby that has SD cards you can just buy a cheap generic SD card and put it in your brothers machine and use it and leave it in the machine when you leave so he always has a SD card.

I would look for a camera with an SD card and use that or go and get another small SD. If you don't erase your data, his will become yours and mess up your averages.

Because these are both Respironics Machines ...

An alternate way of handling the two machines on one SD card is:
1) On your 960 SD card, rename the p-series folder to something like "My 960 p-series"
2) Put the card in your BIL's machine and turn it on. Wait a few minutes and remove the card. His 560 will create a new p-series folder and download the existing data to it.
3) Back on the card, rename the new p-series folder to something like "BIL 560 p-series".
Rename the "My 960 p-series" folder back to p-series and put it back in your 960 machine. You are good to go. While you are visiting, your data gets recorded on your card and his, one-time, data is preserved.

4) When you are home, load your data to your software.
5) Create a new user profile and, copy the "BIL 560 p-series" folder to another blank SD card and rename the "BIL 560 p-series" folder on the new card to "p-series'. Then you can load the new (BIL) data into the new user profile and get his reports.

Of course, its a really lot better to drop in a local store and get two new SD cards so you can carry his data back on one card and leave the other with him.

I forgot my spare SD card it's 60 miles away.
I think I like Pugsy answer best. I will put my card in his machine and fix the directories before I fire up Sleepy head.

Also note that you can just copy the files from his card to online storage and then download it when you get home. You could use dropbox, google drive, or many other services for this.

The easiest way to do this is to just plug the card into a computer, go to the card in file explorer, and then use a program like the free 7zip.org to make a zip archive with all the files in it and upload that single zip file to, let's say, dropbox. Then, when you get home, you can download the zip file, unzip it, and load the data into a second sleepyhead profile.

If you taught him how to do this, he could upload his data on his own whenever he wanted you to look at it.
