VPAP/CPAP Nasal Issues Fixed!

Post by Yames » Sat Apr 18, 2015 2:25 pm

Hey All, - I had a real problem with serious nose issues for my first few months on a VPAP, with both a nasal mask and a full face mask . Excess Mucus, dry mucus (crusting) nose bleeds I had all of it, quite uncomfortable. I'm posting here because I got it fixed!

On a visit to my dermotologist (Dr. Jih in Houston, Texas), I mentioned that the inside of my nose was a mess since I had been on a VPAP. She was familiar with the problem and said many of her patients had this problem because of drying of their mucus membranes from the forced air of the VPAP. She gave me a prescription for Mupirocin 2% ointment, which is a topical antibiotic. I put a BB sized dot of it on a Q-tip and rub it all over the inside of each nostril for as far as I can reach each night before going to sleep. This fixed the problem the first night, and I have not had a problem since.

Prior to this I had maxed out the humidifier on my ResMed S9, used Claritin to control the congestion/mucus build-up (this made it worse by drying my membranes even more) and was using Flonase in an attempt to control congestion and inflammation.

None of this worked, but the Mupirocin is great. I haven't tried it, but I suspect that the clear ointment the medication is in may be protecting my sensitive membranes from the airflow, so Vaseline may work as well as Mupirocin if applied to cover the inside of the nostril.

Hope this helps someone, it's been great for me.
