Is there a good place to compare generations of CPAP machine

Post by yaconsult » Fri Apr 17, 2015 9:11 am

I am wondering if there are any websites to compare various generations of CPAP machines. Especially for those of us who keep an eye out for used equipment, how does one compare the pluses and minuses of various machines? I'm only interested in machines that are compatible with sleepyhead, so that cuts the list down somewhat.

Is the only answer to download the manuals and compare them? Is there information on the different algorithms used by different makes and models? Is comparing them on cpap.com the best that I can do?

Yeah, that definitely limits the field. Basically two generations of Philips/Respironics ( 50 and 60 series ) and about the same with ResMed ( S9 and A10 ) machines.

And, it depends on what the criteria is for comparison purposes. The newer models that came out in 2010, so that's right at five years. We keep reading about some "issues" with those earlier machines......burned wires, flaky electrical connections and humidifier problems with the PR machines and some software/firmware issues with the S9s......0.0 AHI numbers till the user reboots the machine......and that there were various firmware levels that were issued (whether they were updated or not is another issue). Firmware updates are not always desirable. Speaking from experience with the old Legacy series machines, I personally liked the first "2.5" firmware level best. And, I do have machines with each firmware level...... 2.5, 2.6, 2.7 and 2.8.

There are various issues/problems that have affected just about every generation of machine from every manufacturer, from what I've seen in the last 10 years.
So, basically, buying any used/previously owned machine is a roll of the dice.......Your Mileage May Vary.
Regarding the machines I own, I've only had one mechanical issue with the first one I got when I started. At about a year, it started developing a little noise when the motor changed speeds with the C-Flex operation. I sent it in under warranty and it has been perfectly silent ever since. My machines have anywhere from a few hundred hours to over 10K hours on them. All but three (7) had 10 or less blower hours on them when I acquired them ( three were purchased brand new from CPAP.COM ). Some of the machines and their different firmware levels have their own little "quirks", but from a functional standpoint, they're doing what they're supposed to do.......blow air (quietly).
