Can gaining weight need for an increase in pressure

Post by kal81 » Wed Dec 18, 2013 6:08 am

Hallo fellow Cpap users and friends...

I have got an Apap machine with a pressure range from 4-14
in the last month i have started to feel the same fatigue sleepy symptoms i had before i had my machine
spoke to the company who sent me the machine they said if ive put on weight..it could be i need a pressure increase.
im going tommorow to my doctor to see if she will prescribe the increase.

has anyone ever had these problems...struggling at the moment..really tired..i was enjoying the sleep the machine was helping me with
hadnt felt like that for years..cant remember how long ago i felt like that..cant handle going back to being fatigied all the time..

anyone suggestion...im keeping a solid sleep routine...trying to exercise aswell...but still wake up feeling foggy
also i cant take any readings of my machine...only the specialist can do that

You can check your machine - the techs/docs just like to say that you can't (some even have said it's illegal - it's definitely absolutely not!) but you need your clinician manual and we can help you get it. What machine do you have - mfgr, model # (on the bottom of the unit - empty humidifier water before turning it over tho'), everything you can find on the machine to ID it? Your lower pressure setting of 4 is useless and does need to be raised - whoever you are. Do you not have software/card reader to track your own progress on computer?

Weight gain can make a difference and so can loss - I can tell if I lose even 5-10 lbs at times.

Here's the latest study I found that may help answer the question.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24082315

If you have put on some weight, a pressure increase may indeed help. Another thing to watch out for is the condition of your mask. If it needs to be cleaned or the cushion is starting to show wear, you may need to clean/replace it.

Good luck!

Wish we had the reports your machine gathers but we don't.
Without them...if they want to increase the pressure...they need to increase the minimum from 4 to whatever (I think 6 would be a good start) as it is the minimum pressure in apap mode that is the most critical.
Increasing the minimum would better hold the airway open to start with and the machine hopefully wouldn't have to be increasing the pressure as much (if that is what is happening)....better to prevent the collapse of the airway in the first place than to try to fix it with more pressure after the fact.
The machine can't go for 4 to 12 in the blink of an eye...takes some time to get up there and while it is making its way up to where ever it thinks it needs to go the apnea events can come and go.

Otherwise...also evaluate your sleep in general...has anything changed? Less hours of sleep or more fragmented sleep? Change in meds or added meds?
Leaks?
Not every "tired" symptom is related to sleep apnea and if it isn't...more pressure won't fix it.

You need to find a source to acquire "WEINMANNsupport PC Software for Sleep Therapy Devices by Weinmann" to be able to see your nightly data. Here's a link to the product information (copy the link, take out the spaces and paste into browser)

https : // www . weinmann . de/en/products/sleep_therapy/weinmannsupport_pc_software_for_sleep_therapy_devices/

I also think your minimum pressure is too low and your machine can't respond to the events.

I just did a Google search on "weinmannsupport pc software download" and there seem to be some sources to download the software.

Thanks for all Your replys..i find it amazing that there are people out there who would help a stranger just because we share the same illness..

I was at the doctors today..they are going to increase the pressure to 6-16
I was also at the electric store..the wire that is used to set the machine can only be bought
From the manufacturer as a specialist...but I have found the manual and the machine itself can read out
A leak rate and also a mask pressure test...shame nowone told me before...
Thanks again for all the replys...all the help is always much appreciated..

I will but up any data I find off the machine...
