Using/trying new masks?

Post by Twelve12 » Wed Apr 01, 2015 5:49 am

I am waiting for CPAP machine, which is supposed to arrive maybe end of week. The mask we discussed over the phone is a nasal pillow mask. I think that will likely be my best choice. I am a side sleep and also want as little as possible on my face. Well now I have a pretty horrible cold (or allergies). I am hoping in day or two, this goes away but if I am still dealing with bad congestion when machine/mask arrive, I am unsure if I will actually be able to use nasal pillows. I need to find out about my benefits in regards to mask. I seem to have good insurance and I think mask covered -- and probably replacements.

I see how others have used or tried different masks. Did you buy out of pocket? Did you wait for insurance to pay for new mask? I think I would like use nasal pillow mask but have a full face mask for times when I am congested. Also, there are two types of nasal pillow masks I want to try. I have had quite a lot of medical expenses past few weeks (even with good insurance), so I also want to keep out of pocket expenses to minimum.

I do know a lot of tricks for relieving congestion -- and am doing all of that. Even so, it's pretty bad right now and I am not making much progress in clearing congestion.

A lot of people keep a FFM on hand for such times.

Some people buy out of pocket and some people just wait until their insurance allowance to pick up a spare mask of a different type.
Like if you wanted to have a full face mask on hand for times when the nose wouldn't let you use the nasal pillow mask. Use the insurance replacement allowance for a full face mask since FFM typically cost more than nasal pillow masks.
Also with nasal pillow masks typically the headgear part of it will last forever with common sense care (the exception being maybe the P10 headgear). And really all that is maybe needed for a nasal pillow mask would be some new nasal pillows.

So there are ways to keep the out of pocket costs to a minimum...even if using the Resmed AirFit P10 nasal pillow and it's pesky headgear that could potentially need replacing.

Do you know the exact replacement allowance that your insurance goes by for masks and replacement mask items?
Some will let you have a new complete mask every 3 months and some it is every 6 months with replacement cushions or nasal pillows usually monthly.
If you have Medicare...that schedule is common but if you have a different schedule you may have different allowances and different time frames.
